Stanford/Rice cardboard prediction game -
BostonCard - 08-18-2017
Hi everyone,
Since no one else has stepped up to do it, I guess I'll be putting together the annual prediction game again. Enclosed is a link to the form for the Rice game. For those of you who don't have access to google docs, you can pm me your prediction.
https://goo.gl/forms/V821sK4pxU7Bg4ve2
A few people have grumbled about the scoring system, and I am open to comments and/or suggestions. The rules will need to be locked down by kickoff. A reminder of the current rules:
Quote:* Error is calculated as the sum of the error between your predicted spread and the actual spread, and your predicted mean score and the actual mean score. Thus, if you predict Stanford 32, Rice 12, and the actual score is Stanford 45, Rice 18, the error in spread is 7 (actual spread is 27, you predicted a 20 point spread) and the error in mean is 11.5 (you predicted a mean score of 20, the actual mean was 31.5). Thus, the "total error" is 18.5.
* Everybody is ranked first by whether you predicted the correct winner or not and then by error. This ensures that all the people who picked the right winner will get more points than all the people who picked the wrong winner, no matter how close they were to the actual score.
* The number of points you get for the week is equal to the number of people ranked equal or lower than you (including yourself). Thus, scores will range from 1 to n, where n is the number of people who submitted a pick for the week.
These rules are open to discussion but will need to be finalized by kickoff.
Good luck everyone.

We're thinking similarly. I went with Stanford 34, Rice 13. We're much more than 3 touchdowns better, but we won't play like it. I figure it'll be something like 24-6 at half, with our second half offense getting even more conservative, and Rice scoring a late TD against our third-string D. We will learn next to nothing about how good we are, but it'll feel good to be back!

Wow, it's striking how many people have such similar estimates.
I put in Stanford 38-13.
I gave a little extra to Stanford relative to some people perhaps because, looking at Rice's schedule last year, most teams who beat them scored 40+, and apparently their defense is not an area of major hope for improvement. So even if Shaw goes super vanilla and lays off the gas, I think there are just going to be too many missed tackles, missed assignments, and outrun defenders this early in the season.
Even though I am super-excited about Stanford's defense this season, and normally I'd think they'd have the potential to play a shut out, Rice retrns all 5 offensive lineman this year, and some other offensive pieces. And the defensive front is where Stanford will be breaking in some new players, though I think Horrible Harry is gonna create some highlight tape. So I see them getting into the red zone a few times. I'm actually glad the defense will face an experienced, conpletely-returning o line this early, and I hope the defense gets some experience and some good notes to get ready for SC.

Good summary; pretty much the way I feel about the game. When the younger guys (like Costello and maybe Wedington and St. Brown) get in I hope Shaw allows them to show what they can do rather than play so conservatively that we can't tell.

Unfortunately, I am pretty sure that if we are lucky enough to see Costello, it will be to hand the ball off. Wide receivers will get to block a lot. You don't throw long passes when you are up by 30, or even 20. Still, the experience will be valuable to the guys who get to play. Also, there may be some 3rd and longs that will allow a reason to pass. 8 in the box probably won't.
