FALL Starts TODAY -
Viking_Guy - 08-18-2017
First official sports result of 2017-18 will happen this evening.
#2 Stanford women's soccer taking on Marquette in Wisconsin. The Golden Eagles made the tourney last season, so it should be a good match. Gametime is 5:30 PT. Will try to follow - looks like there is a webcast, or at least streaming stats.
Go Cardinal!

No time for a full recap, but:
Jahansouz saved a PK with about 20 minutes left in the first half. The one really questionable thing about the Cardinal today was they were very willing to take chances on trying to trap the ball and move forward in the same motion - a lot of balls left behind with the player out of position, either in trying to nick the ball away and running right past an opposing player, leaving her with the ball at her feet moving forward, or (in the buildup to the PK call) trying to trap a ball softly and letting it get under their feet (I think it was McGrady at left back), leaving Cook stuck in a 2 v 1 and way too square with her inside mark. The Marquette player slotted an easy through ball to the forward, and Jahansouz came out and dove, but brought the player down. Luckily, the PK take hit a fairly soft ball to Alison's right, which she saved pretty routinely.
The revelation was Kiara Pickett at right back - we haven't had that much speed out there in a LONG time. She tore up the Golden Eagles' left side for a lot of the game. Nice touch, too,
Boissiere filled in for Andi Sullivan, who got a bit of run in the latter part of the first half and first part of the second (about 30 minutes total), and looked solid on her knee.
First goal by another frosh, Catarina Macario, who ran onto a bouncing ball at the 18 after an initial shot by Davidson was saved and absolutely smoked a shot through traffic that left the Marquette keeper no chance. Then Kyra Carusa kept up her thing - in the right place, at the right time, with the right finish. Getting on the end of a nice cross from DiBiasi, who fought off a defender to win the ball on the endline and dropped a ball back to Kyra for an easy open 8 yard finish. Then Kyra got on the end of a lofted ball in from McGrady and sent a clean header in. Final goal was by Mariah Lee, who somehow got free on the far post for an easy headed finish from a Boissiere corner kick.
Some problems with disconnection between the mid and the backline - understandable, with Boissiere covering for Sullivan. But a lot of the major problems were, as I mentioned, starting into an offensive move before being certain in possession.
Game ball to Kyra, with strong honorable mention to Pickett.
Competition moves up a notch with Wisconsin on Sunday, and then moves up a few more notches with #7 Florida next week. Interestingly, Wisconsin beat Marquette 1-0 in the first round of last year's NCAA tourney before losing to the Gators 3-2 in 2OT.

Stanford passed its first weekend test pretty well. Beat Wisconsin today 5-0 in Madison.

Next up - a big match at Florida next weekend.

5-0...wow. That's fairly dominant, right? Or is the scoring a bit inflated in the college game?

There's more scoring in NCAA than in Serie A, but 4-0 and 5-0 on the road is still super strong, although the upcoming Florida game will be the first real benchmark this year.

The other thing about both games was that neither team completely bunkered in. They didn't just play 10 people behind the ball with a single forward, they tried to play offense. Early season, both opposing coaches looked to be seeing what they had in their sides. For example, last year we outshot Marquette at home something like 31-2. This year, they were right in it for a good portion of the game, and it could've been a much different outcome if that early PK had gone in.
I'm worried that Stanford's weakness is going to be size - there's not a lot of bigger players on the team, and against teams that are big and physical, especially in the midfield, I could see us having problems. And the Gators should be a good test of that - they tend to field teams concentrating on size and speed, rather than sheer technical ability.
