Re: RIP Bob Murphy - BobK - 08-22-2017

Definitely a Stanford icon.  Yes I saw him pitch but right after Stanford with the Oakland Oaks

He was in very bad shape the last few years.    My thoughts with his family

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - Phogge - 08-22-2017

Bob was the perfect replacement for the crusty Don Liebendorfer as SID. He actually made our job easier rather than put roadblocks in our path. Bob was a great role model for Cavalli and Rose who followed him as SID's.

Later on I played golf with him in Art Santo Domingo's event. He was hilarious making fun of Talboy, Bobby Bonds and others.  He narrated a couple of our films and was a wonderful lunch companion. Great guy. RIP.

Bobbbbbbbbbb, I have an old B&W PCL card of him in an Oaks uni.

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - CardinalSagehen - 08-22-2017

I did not know him the way you gentlemen did, but growing up locally in the 80s, I enjoyed many of his colorful anecdotes on the radio. His passion for Stanford sports was contagious and unrivaled.  RIP, Murph.

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - triangle2 - 08-23-2017

"And he was fouled!!!"

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - Phogge - 08-23-2017

Plus one Triangle2.

Back when I was stupid enough to listen to the brain dead idiots on KNBR they made fun of Murph's call on the MadDog dunk. They absolutely didn't understand.

Murph WAS Stanford athletics. Simple as that.

I remember Radnich playing Murph's dunk call over and over the following day. It was not my impression that he was making fun of the call, but giving it lots of play because it was great, candid call.

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - BostonCard - 08-23-2017

As I recall, Terry's Stanford Football dictionary had "Murph" as an entry, recalling Bob Murphy's amazing ability to interject an obscure Stanford related anecdote into any broadcast, no matter how tangential it was.

Maybe he can reproduce it in this thread...

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - needle - 08-23-2017

I'm just a fan who heard Murph on the radio for maybe a couple dozen Stanford football and basketball games.

But this feels like a big loss to me. His love of Stanford sports (really the people involved) came through loud and clear.

Condolences to family and friends.

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - magnus - 08-23-2017

He did the final clock countdown in the Greatest Upset Ever right?

I remember KNBR used to cut and paste audio from the countdown whenever they needed a number sound effect.

Here is the "Murph" entry from the Stanford football dictionary --

Murph – Murph refers to retired Stanford broadcasting legend Bob Murphy. Murph can be either a verb or a noun. "To Murph" is to conduct an interview of a Stanford player so that the only possible answer is "yes, I agree." An example of Murphing: "Todd, it looked like you really had good chemistry with Troy out there today, I guess all those summer workouts must have paid off, when all you guys worked so hard all summer long, just for that moment, so that you could tell exactly where he was going, and that's what allowed you to hit him on that long pass in the corner of the end zone in the third quarter, which reminded me of a pass Bobby Garrett threw to Sam Morley in our great win against Michigan in 1952. Talk about that." Todd: "Uh, right." Todd, you've been Murphed!

A secondary meaning of "to Murph" is to toss in references to former Stanford athletes who most of us never saw and many of us never heard of, but who were good friends with Murph back in the day.  This type of Murphing also shows up in the last example.

A third type of Murphing involves pulling one of your old buddies out of the crowd and putting him on the microphone, which is how we used to end up listening to Murphy and an old pal talking about a 1951 baseball road trip during a football pre-game show.

As a noun, a "Murph" is a play call that Murphy made on the air, and that he wishes had happened, and that almost happened, but didn't really happen. An example of a Murph: "Childress goes high for the rebound and the putback! Wow, did he really get up there! He's just so athletic, as we were discussing with Jo Chez in the hotel today! Oh, and he almost got it, but the Bruins came down with it and scored at the other end." When you only had radio coverage, with no TV, a Murph was especially entertaining.

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - bbm233 - 08-24-2017

My lasting memory of Murph broadcasts is how efficient Platz was in interjecting what was going on during basketball games while Murph was off on one of his stories.

Murph: "...and that was a great event at the team hotel on the riverwalk during the Final Four..."
Platz: "Steal by Hernandez who lays it in. Cardinal up by 4."
Murph: "...I ran into so many former players, including Adam Keefe, who has two lovely daughters who are destined to return to the Farm..."

Murph would have been a great baseball announcer, with so much time between pitches and so many stories to tell.

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - Phogge - 08-24-2017

I never listen to Radnitch. Razor Voice used to ridicule the MadDog call.

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - Spiny_Norman - 08-24-2017

Kudos to the Stanford Magazine for getting the audio from KNBR to three of Bob Murphy's most famous calls.

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - fullmetal - 08-24-2017

Those were classic.  Glad he got to see the recent resurgence of football as well as the basketball glory days.

Thanks for sharing. Great memories.

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - 81alum - 08-24-2017

Those are priceless.  I never met the man, but in this odd way, he shared many moments of sorrow and joy with me.  It feels like I have lost a friend--a friend I never really knew.

Nice to see he was right about that!

Re: RIP Bob Murphy - Mick - 08-25-2017

My father in law was a third stringer in the 1950s.  He always lit up when Murph mentioned him on his show, which he did 2-3 times.
