WVB season starts on Friday - Spiny_Norman - 08-23-2017

The defending national champions start the season with 3 matches in Long Beach this weekend vs. LB State, Iowa and Wright State.  Following that are non-conference matches vs. Penn State (twice), Texas A&M and Illinois before the Pac 12 season begins.

It's a new era for WVB.  John Dunning retired, Kevin Hambly comes to Stanford from Illinois. Inky Ajanaku and Kelsey Humphreys graduated. Ivana Vanjak, Hayley Hodson and Halland McKenna are no longer playing VB at Stanford.  The team is very young with only one senior, Merete Lutz.

Lack of depth no surprise with Hodson Vanjak and McKenna leaving early we only have 9 players who arrived with a scholarship. That said McClure looked outstanding. Wow outstanding.

Fitzmorris looked great on the slide moving to MB1 with Alade MB2.

Lutz will serve and hit back row

M Keefe will play OH she is now healthy. But McClure looked great.

Fun BBQ and great meeting and talking to players and the new coaches.
For fans who attend games Hambly will be doing chalk talks and closer to game time and in Kissick .

Any guesses whether we'll see any changes in play style or strategy (not that I can really tell the difference) with the new coach? Denise was retained on staff right? Were other staff?

Denise is the lead assistant and recruiting co coordinator as before.  Amy Brown just left.

Style looked much the same but Plummer is 6-6 and McClure 6-0 so the sets to McClure will be quicker.  Also we will hit more up the pipe.

I'm still saddened by the fact that Hodson is no longer on the team.  I completely understand why she retired and I wish her nothing but the best and a healthy recovery.  Last year's team could have been the dream team with a healthy Hodson.  We all know that didn't happen.  After the season ended, I was really still excited to see Plummer and Hodson on the outside.  Well, that's never going to happen.  Hodson was so much fun to watch especially when she hits the D set.

The team is missing key pieces of a great team.  To lose the talents and the leaderships of Inky and Hodson is brobdingnagian.  The team still has great talents but lacks depth.  How will the OH2 and MB2 perform?  Who will step up as the leader? Will it be  Hentz who will emerge as the leader?  Will Lutz finally dominate on the right side or at least have the same production as Hodson's first year.

The team this year will have its fair share of struggles.  I hope everyone will stay healthy as the team cannot afford any injury.  I am excited to see the growth of the 2nd year players.  Lastly, I hope coach Hambly can coach.

It's a back row set.  Hitter will hit from the middle back.  Hitter has to take off before the 3 meter line but is allowed to land in the front row.  It's a fun set and usually a "bailout" set.  I am not sure if current team has a player who can effectively hit the pipe set.

As long as we're asking questions, what's the difference between a pipe and a D set? I understand both are sets to a back row player.

Both are back row sets; the D set is for the right side player (usually near the sideline) while the pipe set is in the middle.

Card 77 you do know Hodson just played a few games last season and those with leg injuries. 

So she isn't a loss from last season

That said it's very sad that she had to retire.  She worked with the national team as a HS Sr taking on line classes.  She is a Stanford student and will be at Stanford in England this Qtr or more.  A wonderful person

Oooof.  Looks like Stanford just force-fed Plummer and McClure into overwhelming LBSU.  Lion's share of total attempts there.  Early season indeed.

Lutz had a large boot on.  Worry about an ankle
