SaturdayBlitz blog: Stanford 2017 week by week predictions to go 10-2 - ADPATERSON - 08-23-2017

Posted today, offering a 10-2 predicted season with a loss to USC early, and to NDAM, not WASH.
https://saturdayblitz.com/2017/08/23/stanford-football-game-predictions-2017/

That puts us in the Pac12 Champ game by going 5-0 in the North.
But at 11-2 (beating USC in the Champ game again), a loss to NDAM would likely keep us below the CFP.
The Away trap games @WAST, and @UTAH are troublesome, but winnable.
Obviously, winning at Troy early is the best case, but even with a close loss, we stay in the hunt til Nov. 10.
We need to take advantage of the home slate THIS season.  Much worse in 2018.

My model would disagree that WSU is a trap game. In its preseason rankings, they are #14, Stanford #18. If things play out per the model, WSU will actually be favored. WSU is #8 in the predicted final AP Poll, with Stanford (9-3) at #23. But Mr. Chryst has the talent to turn those predictions to rubbish.

And given how totally they beat us in 2016, we aren't going up there with any illusions about how good they are.

I hope so, but I think it is our defensive secondary that will win the game for us. Slowing down/stopping the air raid makes winning the game lots easier  ;D.

Yeah, WSU and Utah are not trap games precisely because we know they're eminently losable games if Stanford doesn't play at a high-level.  I'll say it again, Stanford is 0-2 vs. Utah in this decade.  And I still remember the pucker moment when WSU missed the kick to give Stanford the win in Pullman...

(It must be super hard to effectively rush the passer in wet conditions on Astroturf.)

That was my all-time favorite Hogan game. That WSU defense did as well as any team trying to stop Caff, and K-Ho brought the heart and the leadership.

I don't know why I read these things - the click thorugh format itself should be enough to tell me that it won't even make it to amateur hour.

Whatever exactly this site is, it seems to have assigned covering Stanford to some guy name Connor Muldowney. His bio says he is a recent Michigan State fan. It seems he hasn't bother to learn much more than the names of the guys on the Stanford team.

What really bugs me about this article is that the guy has replaced any attempt at analysis of the various games and matchups with ridiculously specific predictions. So we get gems like,
"Keller Chryst will find Dalton Schultz six times for 122 yards and a score." [vs. Oregon]
"Cameron Scarlett comes off the bench to surprise people in the run game" [vs Washington]
"Keller Chryst will ... torch San Diego State’s secondary for 350 yards and three scores."
[This one seems particularly unlikely since only twice has a Stanford QB thrown for 350+ in a game since 2001 - Luck vs Arizona in 2009 and Luck vs Colorado 2011; but no reason it couldn't happen.]

The analytical comments he does make about the team seem odd.
"the Cardinal’s young defense will be trying to gel still [vs $C]" - for a defense returning 9 starters.

And of course the guy desperately needs an editor.
"This one won’t be a blowout, per say"
"Year one under Taggart’s guidance may not be completely successful, though. There are a number of tough games on the schedule, including this road game against Oregon."

... I must be feeling grumpy tonight.
