Week 1 Depth Chart - ColoradoTree - 08-24-2017

It's finally here!  (I didn't see it on another thread yet; apologies if I missed it.)

JJAW isn't listed in the two deep at receiver. I assume he is injured. Anybody know anything about it?

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - ColoradoTree - 08-24-2017

Initial thoughts:

* Sarell is listed as the backup at LT, and Little is listed as the backup at RT, so it seems safe to assume that they'll find their way onto the field at some point this season.

* The starting OL is, left to right, Bright-Herbig-Burkett-Fanaika-Hamilton

* Bryce Love is obviously the starter at RB, but it's still unclear who backs him up--it's listed as Scarlett OR Maddox OR Speights

* Four TEs on the depth chart.  Schultz is first, and Parkinson is fourth, but it's a tie for the backup spot between Smith and Harrington.

* Some backup QB intrigue: there's an interesting little "or" between Burns and Costello.

* Starting DL is Cotton-Phillips-Jackson; starting LBs are Kalambayi, Okereke, Barton, and Toohill.  Alfieri is backup up Okereke at ILB, and Fox is backup up Toohill at OLB.

* No Arcega-Whiteside at WR, and Tyler starts over Stewart.  Wedington is backing up Irwin, so he should see the field on Saturday.

* No A.T. Hall (I understand he's not making the trip for as-yet-unknown reasons).

* Whither Mike Tyler?

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - donkey687 - 08-24-2017

Mike Tyler also missing on depth chart. Not a great start to the year missing 3 likely starters in Hall, Tyler and Whiteside.  I imagine Alfieri may be banged up as well given he is listed second on the depth chart.

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - donkey687 - 08-24-2017

Who plays nickel? Alexander, Murphy, Edwards, Buncom?Given that the nickel back is often on the field for more downs than the third DL, I wish they would add nickel to the depth chart.

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - Phogge - 08-24-2017

Best players available play. I hope that they can settle on the inside backers this season and stay in the flow. Perez has disappeared from the chart.

Shaw was once quoted as saying that Jay Tyler was hard to tackle in a phone booth. Maybe we'll see it Saturday.

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - BobK - 08-24-2017

Mike Tyler and JJ both injured and have missed practices recently

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - Hulk01 - 08-24-2017

Last year, our nickel was almost always a safety.  We deployed him (usually Hoff) up near the line of scrimmage and matched against the slot receiver.

Assuming the coaches sticks with this big nickel concept, Edwards seems the best bet as our fifth defensive back.  He's the nearest thing to Hoff and played that role when Hoff was out last year.  Buncom, now a safety, seems the next man up/next best choice.

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - Durty Nelly - 08-24-2017

Surprised to see Barton starting at ILB but good for him.  Expected to see Alfieri there.

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - stanfan95118 - 08-24-2017

Also somewhat interesting: Sarell is at left tackle and Little is at right.

Curious to see if Alfieri plays much, i.e., whether he is injured.

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - OutsiderFan - 08-24-2017

Nice to see so many True Frosh in the 2-deep on offense.

If JJAW has to be out, it would be terrific if Wedington gets some reps that make him better than he would have been had JJAW not been held out.  Of course, JJAW could still possibly play even if he isn't on the depth chart if his injury is minor.

Speaking of Wedington, man am I glad he's being used at WR and not redshirting at RB.

Don't think Stanford loses much with Toohill over Tyler, and this probably means more reps for Robinson all things considered.

Man, what a deep and experienced secondary!

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - Hank 91 - 08-24-2017

Also note that Bryce Love isn't listed on either kick return team. When I spoke to him at Media Day, he said, "I know I'm returning kickoffs, and I hope to return punts." I think this is a good thing, assuming we can still get decent production there.

Do you think that indicates a change of heart by the coaching staff that will remain in place for the entire season, a desire to limit the possibility of injury in a game where we shouldn't need his explosiveness at KR (but he'll return there against SC), or something else?  I wouldn't think we'd be playing games with the depth chart against Rice, so I don't expect to see him returning anything in Sydney.

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - fullmetal - 08-24-2017

I echo sentiments of satisfaction at seeing the talented frosh on the 2-deep.  The good frosh may not stay four years...

Actually, if they are the backups, we almost for sure will see them against Rice. I am very pleased with this eventuality, because it indicates that at least most of the "hype" surrounding these two players was justified. The coaching staff (at least for now) thinks they are already College-level players. That is a very good sign!

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - OutsiderFan - 08-24-2017

The other thing about Little and Sarell both being #2 on the depth chart is that it certainly leaves open the possibility that Stanford could have two True Frosh starting OTs at some point this season.  The heat is on Bright, Hamilton and Hall to stay healthy and stave them off.

I expect this is just caution. I also expect Love will not return kickoffs all the time. They will put him back there when they think the ends justifies the risk. How that decision is made, I don't know for sure, but that is what I expect to happen. If one of the other options emerges as really good, that may change.

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - Spiny_Norman - 08-24-2017

One other observation - this is a young team (though not inexperienced).  Among the players listed as starters for week 1, only 4 are in their final year of eligibility (Bright, Marx, Cotton, Kalambayi).

That really is remarkable, especially when combined with only losing three starters from last year to graduation (Lloyd, Caspers, Rector).
[There were two other guys who were starters at least part time - Owusu and Hoffpaiur.]

This is the reason that some of the more detailed analysts out there have been suggesting 2018 might be Stanford's year (e.g. Bill Connelly).

Re: Week 1 Depth Chart - YA_TITTLE - 08-24-2017

I was at a practice last week and JJAW was in a knee brace but working out off to the side with a trainer. Hopefully he'll be back soon.
