If you told me Irwin would only have two catches and JjAW none because of injury, I would have been concerned that something was wrong. But Weddington, plus our tight ends have more than made up for it.

Wedington was the story of this game as far as I'm concerned. Closely followed by the three headed monster - Schultz, Smith and Parkinson. They will present matchup problems. Add JJ and you have another match-up problem.
I thought KC looked good. But I have to say, the ball just looks different out of Costello's hand.

Same here. There was an obvious difference in release time between Costello and Chryst/Burns. But, perhaps at the cost of more erratic accuracy. The talent is there, but perhaps some more seasoning/discipline is needed.

A noticeable difference. I love that quick release. I know it's wishful thinking, but I'd like to see what he can do with the first string offense.Â
Seriously, I kinda thought we should have sat Love after he reached 111 yards in 6 carries. And our first-string D was in there way too long IMHO.
This was a tough game to evaluate because Rice was so utterly inept on offense and physically overmatched on defense. But it does look like our relative lack of lateral speed on defense can be exploited.
OTOH I'm going to enjoy watching Irwin and Wedington catch the ball this year.

Rice was playing a lot of misdirection--it might not be strictly lateral speed that gave Stanford fits.

Normally, I would agree, but this is our first game of the season, and represented an opportunity for the first team to get some additional practice and experience. It was clear that Shaw was having our QB's throw (including Chryst), not because he was trying to run up the score, but because he was trying to see what they could do, and to gain experience and work through some things. That's why we threw on fourth down even though we were averaging over 10 yards per carry at that point. I imagine that later in the season, in that spot, we just give the ball to Scarlett, but for now, it was good to see what Chryst could do.

Also, throwing on fourth down is probably a lower percentage play than just running. It does keep the score down, as we didn't make it (although it took a good defensive play to stop us).

Because thread drift is seemingly inevitable: when was the last time a Stanford player caught two TDs in his first game as a true freshman?
That's what Parkinson did, and I guess I'd vote him as the story of the game.
