Re: WVB: Stanford vs. PSU - fullmetal - 09-01-2017

Good lord.  Stanford gave up a 5 pt run late in the first set to give PSU their first lead of the set at 21-20.  Both teams clawed points from each other (unforced errors included) up until Plummer tooled the PSU block to tie it at 24-all.  But PSU then took the next two to win the first set.

Remarkably similar stats from both teams, except 4 service errors for Stanford to none for PSU, and 1 ace for PSU, none for Stanford.  PSU has 3 blocks, Stanford with one.

Also, Merete Lutz was injured in practice last week and is not playing.  I didn't hear that til just now.  The PSU announcer is pretty decent.

In set two, Stanford scored first but couldn't really shake PSU.  Stanford would be up by as much as three points a couple of times, but PSU hung in there until the score was tied 15-15.  At this point, Penn State ripped off a 10-2 run to win the second set.  Four Stanford errors were committed during that run; Penn State just racked up the points otherwise.  Oof.

Re: WVB: Stanford vs. PSU - fullmetal - 09-01-2017

Down 0-2 sets to PSU, Stanford found itself in an early hole in the third set down 2-5 and again at 3-6.  A steady climb to 10-10 gave Stanford the chance to rip off a 5-0 run, which provided much of the eventual margin of victory for the Cardinal at 25-18.  It's do or die from here on out tonight, PSU up two sets to one for Stanford.  PSU star Simone Lee kind of disappeared in set three...not sure that's going to happen again in set four.

Kathryn Plummer has her personal best for number of kills in a game already, indicative of how much the Stanford attack relies on her hitting.  PSU has been more democratic in their attack, with Ali Frantti having the most total attempts at 29 vs. Plummer at 40.

Lot of Stanford service errors so far, it seems. Not as many aces.  Ratio is not so good there...

Thanks for the quick recaps. Maybe our team will do better in a week.

Re: WVB: Stanford vs. PSU - fullmetal - 09-01-2017

PSU takes set four and the match.  PSU took the lead early and had as much as a three point lead before Stanford tied it up at 9-9.  From there, Penn State scraped out a two point lead at 20-18, which was the closest Stanford would get, as PSU went on a 5-1 run to end the game.  Of note, the announcer mentioned a few times that Stanford players were looking for certain touch calls here and there but weren't getting them--here's hoping the game was called well the whole night.

I guess Hambly has his work cut out for him.  Can't just feed Plummer--McClure and Fitzmorris combined for a hitting percentage of .000 on 55 total attempts (ouch).

Stanford hit .214 (159 TA) for the match, PSU at .257 (144 TA).  Stanford was +7 in service errors committed; PSU was +5 in blocks.  Stanford was +10 in attack errors and +5 in block errors.

Lots to work on.
