Former ND linebacker sues Kelly, university, for negligence - washingtonismoney - 09-06-2017

Claims they withheld medical information and caused permanent damage to his spine: http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/notre-dame/2017/09/06/former-football-player-sues-notre-dame-brian-kelly-alleging-negligence-led-spine-damage/639224001/?cookies=&from=global

(Intense recruitniks may recall the linebacker, Doug Randolph, was a former Stanford commit.)

Ugly.  Yet more "smoke" around purpleface.

Given the tenor of the times, my guess is we are going to see a lot of medically related lawsuits by ex-football players against their former teams.

Fully support.  Coaches ought to act in loco parentis with the interests of the student-athlete at heart.

Obviously I can't comment on the facts of the case, if information was withheld then that is unacceptable.

In general though coaches should not be involved in medical decisions. An injured player should require clearance from independent medical staff and himself before being available to the coach.

in loco parentis does imply acting in the interests of the students, but it also implies a mostly unquestioned right to determine what is in the best interests of the student, without input from the student him/her-self.

The rather obvious conflict in that idea versus the rights of students, who are primarily legal adults, to determine for themselves their best interest led to by and large dumping the idea for universities during the 1960s.

Given what we know about football coaches, don't think I would want to give most of them the unquestioned right to determine what is in the best interest of the players either.
