McCaffrey, After 3 Game, Boom or Bust? - cardcrimson - 09-27-2017

McCaffrey after three games has 73 yards rushing on 25 attempts for 2.9 yards per carry. Fairing much better on the receiving end after a big game against NO: 18 receptions for 173 yards (101 vs NO), 9.6 yards per catch. Boom, bust, or too soon to tell.

25 rushes may be a tad low to draw too any conclusions. Receiving projects to 96 catches for the season at almost ten yards per reception. Hasn't broken any punt returns yet. Obviously way, way too early to judge but he looks very capable, whereas I remember being surprised/concerned at how NFL defenses looked too fast for Toby Gerhart right from the start of his career, even in preseason.

So much of what happens in the NFL is based on your circumstances. Have you watched Carolina?  Newton has been horrible. And he has been particularly bad at short/intermediate throws. For example he had McCaffrey wide open in the second game for what would've been about a 15 yard touchdown. Easy throw.  But he threw it about 5 yards over his head. Carolina is a power running team with a quarterback whose strengths are down field throws and running. He is not a good short/intermediate passer.
And they do not do a good job stretching the field with the running game. Their hope with McCaffrey is that he could open up their offense. And to an extent he  has - he draws a ton of attention.

Three games as I think you know is way way way too early. But no way is he a bust. Unfortunately I don't think he's on the right team. Again circumstances. Ask Andrew Luck whose year may be over and whose career has been heavily damaged.  It's nothing short of a miracle that he got them into the playoffs for three years. At a brobdingnagian physical price. That team absolutely stinks. And the general manager should have been drawn and quartered for not putting an o-line around him.  Firing him wasn't enough.  What a flipping idiot. You protect your greatest asset.  I absolutely get fried every time I think about it

Or what about Prescott? Do you truly think he's the best rookie quarterback ever to have played? Or is the fact that he walked into a team with the NFL's best offensive line  and best running game a factor? Again circumstances. I wanted to see McCaffrey go to a team like Green Bay, Kansas City, New Orleans etc. A team that uses it's backs in the passing game with a quarterback that can fully take advantage of a multi skilled running back. Instead he's with the Panthers. I'm afraid he is a square peg in a round hole on that team. Time will tell. But my guess is his numbers from the line of scrimmage will be rather pedestrian. By the way Stewart is not exactly ripping it up either. Their offensive line has been lousy to boot.

Lex, great reply. Luck reminds me a lot of Plunkett. Got the hell beat out of him because of bad coaching and management. You're right on the Panthers fit as well. Read option team with a quarterback that struggles with the shorter, precision passes.

In the NFL running back is probably not a good fit for McCaffrey.
If Carolina (or eventually a different NFL team) assigns him only to receiver and special teams  , then I think he will thrive.

I thought that Carolina was a pretty good destination for him (NE seemed like the obvious best, at least for as long as Brady's around). Newton's not the best intermediate passer, it's true, but he's by far the best running QB and that running game could've been special. But Newton is clearly not right, he's just been awful and has been for a little while (see: http://www.footballperspective.com/something-is-wrong-with-cam-newton/). Hopefully it's an injury and he shakes it off, but this might be something of a lost year for McCaffrey.
