Record year for Stanford early entries to NFL coming up? -
donkey687 - 09-27-2017
It would be hard to argue with any of these decisions if Love, Phillips, Holder, Meeks and Reid all declare for the draft with eligibility remaining. That would be a blow to next year's team, but those guys are all playing at a pretty high level and would likely be draftable. Have we ever had 5 guys declare early before?

Evaluating safety play is hard, but has Reid really shown enough to justify leaving early?
I also don't think Love is leaving. I don't have any particular justification for this, but it feels to me like he'll stick around.
Love and leaving - Redrum - 09-27-2017
Agents desperate to rep anyone will be telling Love to strike now. But players who choose Stanford in the first place almost never are sold the idea that Stanford is the place to launch to the NFL as soon as possible. A collapsing OLine situation might shade his decision some, but most people's impression is the OLine is (finally) getting better, not dramatically worse. I'd actually bet some money on him staying. Other than fans' normal peanut gallery bitching, I haven't heard or detected of any toxic atmosphere in the team itself...well, except for the part where some unspecified "everyone" wanted Chosen Rosen to take us to the promised land.

Yeah, has anyone who has only been a starter for one year at Stanford ever left early? There probably is somebody, but I'm sure it hasn't happened very often.

It's hard to argue with anyone's decision anywhere, particularly if they are actually able to get drafted. We don't know much about their personal situations, whether they are benefiting from school, etc., etc.
A few short points.
- I don't consider it "leaving early" if a player gets a degree, or at the least that is a different category. That usually, but not always, means whether they stick around four years or not. Under that criterion, Phillips and Holder would not be leaving early.
Maybe that's just a personal pecadillo though, either way it affects the quality of the next year's team.
- Having the ability to get into the NFL is not necessarily the same thing as choosing to leave early. Without knowing the guys involved, it is almost impossible to predict exactly how they balance the pros and cons. Some guys want to stay (Luck, Freeman at Oregon, Falk at WSU, lots more), some don't.
- The incentive to stay drops dramatically once you have a degree. Thus in general I am much more inclined to think the four year guys who can get drafted will go. Thus my basic assumption would be that Phillips and Holder are more likely to go - but that isn't based on any information. I am not sure what Holder's draft prospects are - personally I think they ought to be pretty high but he hasn't had a ton of publicity and was out injured most of last year.
- I don't think the defensive backfield guys have been playing particularly well this year. Of course, that doesn't quite matter in the draft - it's how NFL guys project they
will play.
- Love might be an interesting case. He says he wants to be a pediatrician. The chances he will actually end up doing so go way up if he gets a Bachelor's degree before leaving. But, he'll have to balance that with the short-career-for-running-backs thing.

Two recent head-scracthers (at least to me) were Thomas Keiser and Terrence Brown. Both left with a year of eligibility remaining. Neither was drafted. I don't see much about what Keiser is doing currently. But Terrence Brown is a grad assistant at UW.

I don't think the NFL cares how long you were a starter. See Mitch Trubinsky as a case study.

I feel same way RE Love. I think he'll stay as he's only really been full time starter this year. Only scenario i see him bolting is if he ends the season as the nation's leading rusher (or top 2/3). Cant do much better than that as a RB and his draft stock would be at its highest.

If I had to guess I'd say Phillips and Holder go pro, and of the juniors Meeks is most likely. My guess is Meeks would go in the top 2 or 3 rounds if he stays healthy and comes out this year. Love, even with the amazing year he is having, needs to add more recieving skills to be a top 2-3 round player. Most teams will look at him right now and see him as a "change of pace" back, meaning he can't be your every down guy because he's too small, he can't be the hybrid RB/slot or 3rd down back because he hasn't shown the pass catching ability. Note that those aren't my opinions, but my guess as to how he would be viewed. If he came back from the offseason with a great recieving game to go with his running skills my guess is that he would go in the first two rounds. Reid looks like he has very good instincts but still makes a lot of mistakes to project too highly in the draft and would likely benefit from another year of playing.
