Hello, nine-man box.
Re: Chryst will start tomorrow -

This seems like classic "if you have two QBs, you actually have none" territory. Hypothetically, let's say (in a roughly equivalent) situation in 2015 Hogan wasn't able to play against Oregon State after his SC performance. For the sake of our hypothetical, Chryst performs well -- not gangbusters, but well -- i.e. the same level that Costello played at. Would we have a problem if the coaches went back to Hogan? No, because we know and knew that Hogan was an established, good quarterback.
Therefore, what this decision implicitly shows is the coaches' lack of confidence in Chryst. If you have a lack of confidence in one QB, and you have a youngish QB who by your own public assessment has done well, by god, go with the youngish QB! This seems less than hard.

I hope David Shaw know something we don't...

Maybe doesn't much matter who starts, other than if we waste a possession or two being ineffective, it may be too much to overcome. OTOH, I am in no way surprised by this happening. It is not irrational to think that against Utah's defense, Costello may be over-matched. However, the real question will be "Can Chryst execute the offense well enough for it to matter?". We will find out, I guess. If he can, Shaw is right again. If he can't, Chryst is done and it is Costello's job, full stop.

This is crazy. Just crazy.
I'm glad I can't watch this SDSU redux.

Maybe so.
As I recall, at Colorado in 2012, Nunes played the first two or three series. Then Hogan came in to take his turn. Hogan stayed in the line-up for the rest of the game -- and for the next three and a half years. So it didn't really turn out to be significant that Nunes was the starter that day. We could be looking at a similar situation here.

As someone who attended that game, I wouldn't mind that one bit. We didn't have a Chryst-Costello competition in camp, because it was unquestionably Chryst's job. Now we do, and it'll play out on the field. Since Shaw is committed to playing both of them, if Chryst can't get the ball moving and Costello can, then as long as the game's outcome is in doubt, I would think Shaw will play the hot hand.Â

Just from the old coaches handbook.
You do not lose your starting position due to injury.

Really? Sigh.....OK. Going from a faulty memory, Chryst's best game is little better than what we have already seen from Costello. What will take to get Shaw to pull the trigger on KC?Â

Except that was Colorado before Montgomery, a much less formidable opponent.

This could be the final public tryout for starting quarterback. If Chryst is recovered and Shaw does, in fact, play both in similar and significant spots, there can finally be a true comparison. Also, as easy as it is for us to make a decision, it's important to remember that we don't have all the information. And here's another factor -- while Shaw freely admits that he has a responsibility to play the best player, he can't arbitrarily bench Chryst. He appears to be well-respected by his teammates, as evidenced by their selection of him as one of the team captains. This is a tricky situation right now, but I'm guessing it will less tricky 36 hours from now, one way or the other. There won't be two quarterbacks playing next weekend.

I can't really believe this. I hope Chryst is on one hell of a short leash.

Yep, first two, and both punts, with the two drives totaling about 20 yards. Hogan came in and led six straight scoring drives. I went from frustrated to giddy and stayed there.Â

Fair enough. Shaw indicating that Costello would play seems to indicate he's open to making a change based on
performance, however. And by committing to playing both guys, he's opening the door to making a change based on Costello performing better.Â

The difference between Stanford and Colorado in 2012 was 48 points
The difference between Stanford and Utah on Saturday will likely be one or two possessions. Why waste them on Chryst?
This is so insane.
