Heard a great school song last night -

It's called "Come Join The Band". It was played well and often by the Fremont (Sunnyvale) High Marching Band. It brought back memories from when I used to hear that song played in Stanford Stadium... :(

Thanks for the memories, RS. I remember fondly the singing of a trilogy (Come join the band/Sons of the Stanford Red/ Hail Stanford Hail) with the Glee Club in 64-66. When we did tours of California it brought tears to the alums and us.

Come join the band is played at every men's basketball game.Â
If you enjoy classic Stanford Band tunes get tix for Maples and sit near the band section on the South side. You'll get your fill - maybe not Yellow River, but certainly favorites like ARN, White Punks On Dope, Come Join The Band and Smooth Criminal.

The LSJUMB songs that tug at my heartstrings are Welcome to Paradise and Basket Case. Though I do really like Come Join the Band and wish it was played more.

Other than ARN, Obvious Child is the tune I enjoy most (though it doesn't tug at the heartstrings).

How about White Punks on Dope?

No song has brought more Stanford football fans to their feet while clapping their hands than "Come Join The Band". It's a terrific fight song. Such a shame that this tired excuse for a band gets more and more out of touch with fans on football Saturdays.

Once upon a time, they also did a wonderful representation of the National Anthem. The kids could actually play in the good old days.

Does the band really not do the incredible Arthur Barnes post-JFK assassination version of the National Anthem any more? If this is true, what a pity.......

If the LSJUMB doesn't play Come Join The Band, that's a new thing this year. They have always played as the first song when they come into the stadium. They have also continued to play the Arthur P Barnes version of the anthem.
As for the "tired excuse for a band," it's more than 50 years in its current incarnation, so good luck getting a Big10 style band.

Yes, they still play it, but not nearly as well.

I'm not sure Come Join would get as many people on their feet and clapping at football as ARN does...It certainly doesn't at basketball and volleyball games, and didn't at football games when the track existed and the band played it for the shady side. If old people got to stand and clap for Come Join would they stop yelling at me to sit down after exciting plays?
Anyway, I think the band doesn't play it in the stadium anymore because they either aren't allowed or there isn't space for them to go around the edge of the field pregame. They used to always play Come Join in front of the shady side on the track before going to the endzone to get ready for the pregame show. I thought they now played it at Chuck Taylor before the walk usually, but maybe I'm misremembering (or maybe it's not every time). I would be very surprised if they don't play it at some point during the day.
They certainly do still play it at every basketball and volleyball game, it's the "end of the first half" song. I believe the dollies even still have the traditional mildly racist dance to it...

The play it in their own corner of the stadium right when they arrive.

It's the "we've arrived at our seats" song.

Even now, every time I hear "Swingtown" on the radio, I flash back to the band, and a fired-up sold-out Maples crowd, and the men's hoops squad being introduced before another brobdingnagian game. Still gives me goose bumps to think about.
Say what you want to about the band -- and we all have -- but in a basketball setting, they're hard to top.

You could always go to the UK to watch performed "properly".

I've always worried about what happens when it takes us a while to get our first basket, but the redvests keep at it as needed!

They do it, but not well.
The trumpeter usually isn't very good, and is miked and amplified to ear-bleed level. Then when the trumpet drops out, the quiet section that follows is near inaudible by contrast.
