The maize and blue hordes are getting restive:

Obviously anyone who thinks Harbaugh is overrated and/or no better than Hoke is generous yet foolhardy: donating your brain cells while still alive is nice and all, but you still need them.

And Harbaugh's legions around these parts have been noticeably quieter as he goes through his own version of Chryst/Costello and unproductive offense.

Thats hilarious. I was going to post this Detroit Free Press article calling the UM coaching staff, among other things, stubborn. Hmmm, where have I seen that accusation before.

Unfortunately, coaches are in a no-win situation. When things dont go well, as they didnt on Saturday for Harbaugh, it is so easy to, post facto, say that the coach should have zagged when he zigged. If he sticks to his guns, hes stubborn; if he tries something new, hes panicky or was too quick to abandon his bread and butter.
Good coaches have bad games. Harbaugh is still a great coach for Michigan, and light years better than anything else they can get.

You're absolutely right, BC. I've spoken with literally hundreds of UM football fans and I have yet to run across a UM fan who dislikes Harbaugh, thinks Harbaugh should be removed or is anything other than perfectly complimentary.
BTW, I went to high school, so I don't read the DFP... :P

Agree. I think for some people, bitterly complaining and thinking they are smarter than the coaches is part of the "fun" of being a fan.
As a coach, my father would sometimes complain about the no win situation. If you lose, of course you are a lousy coach. If you win it's "well, look at the talent on that team, anyone could win with that". (I think we've heard that once or twice about the 2015 team with CMac).

Harbaugh's offensive problems seem to be based on no longer having an identity on offense. Because he was in a position to recruit the types of WRs Stanford can't recruit - at least in numbers - he did. So now he has all these talented WRs and wants to pass more. He doesn't play 3 TE sets and I don't remember seeing much use of jumbo personnel any more.
I watched most of the Michigan State game, and at one point Michigan threw the ball at least 8 plays in a row. When they needed the dominant run game in the 4th quarter (especially in the lousy weather), they didn't have it. O'Korn is a good athlete, but he's not a great QB. He needs the help of a run game to be successful in the play action passing game, to make his job easier, but there isn't a run-first mentality being displayed any more. It would not be surprising to see Michigan make a renewed commitment to running the ball against Indiana this weekend.

"And now he has to play the rest of the season without his quarterback, Wilson Speight."
That seemed odd to me. I've watched several quarters of Michigan football, and Speight looked bad. And his PER adds evidence he may not be even an average D-1 starting QB.Â

Harbaugh is 12-1 in B1G games outside of Michigan St and Ohio St where he is 1-4. Growing up in B1G country, I can assure you that Michigan football fans really only care about beating those two teams - and Notre Lame which iirc no longer happens.

The rivalry with Notre Dame resumes next year:

That
sounds right, but growing up in Michigan, with a family full of UofM alums and Ann Arbor residents, I would suggest that there is an element of self-delusion to this common refrain...
Of course, they expect to beat MSU, OSU and ND (and, of course, those are much "bigger"/more exciting games), but G*d forbid you "blow the season" with an unexpected loss to an Illinois or something, the fans are just as merciless/unforgiving! The fact is that, notwithstanding the fact that they've only won 1/2 of a National Championship since 1948 (69 years ago!), Michigan fans (much like Nebraska fans, Notre Dame fans, and many others who "live in the past") often firmly believe that they are entitled to a National Championship essentially "every third year or so" (they don't want to be greedy, of course)!Â
In fact, despite having mocked Harbaugh as a "Michigan-wanna-be", when (as Stanford's coach) he constructively called-out their "either/or" approach to football players and academics (relegating him, when he played at Michigan, to a General Studies major that was designed to keep their players on the field and out of the library), my brothers promptly predicted "at least two National Championships in his first seven years" when he left the 'Niners to become their next savior ::)
They were absolutely furious with me when I reminded them that the great Bo Schembechler won exactly zero national championships. They also refuse to admit that Lloyd Carr was essentially pushed into retirement a couple of years after committing the sin of losing a 5th game in 2005 (the Wiki definition of Karma should feature a picture of Rich Rod - who was hired in a shameful ethical debacle that led both the AD and President of the school to lie to the public, before settling the case with WVU to avoid depositions under oath).Â
I actually believed that Hoke (and certainly Harbaugh) were good hires, at the time, but predicted that the love affair with Harbaugh would not last seven years. I'm feeling good about that prediction right about now :(

Harbaugh doesn't last anywhere 7 years, so your prediction is a pretty safe one (although if he were to last any place that long, it would be Ann Arbor).Â
No tears for him or MichiganFan, including last Saturday. Tip of the hat for MichiganFan out in force in monsoon conditions. At least it wasn't cold and rainy (or didn't appear to be, anyway, with lots of short sleeves in attendance).
P.S. Worth noting that Michigan is still alive in the CFP (as is Auburn, btw). 1-loss teams with lots of marquee matchups on the schedule are right in the mix.
