OT: Wildfires - BostonCard - 10-09-2017

I hope all the Carboard colleagues affected by recent natural disasters (including the earlier hurricanes) and the more recent wildfires in Northern California are safe.  I figure that there must be several Cardboarders from the North Bay and I hope you guys are all right.  I could smell the smoke from here in Burlingame this morning.

Thanks BC - we're up in Blackpoint/Novato and were 2 miles downwind from the Sears Point fire so woke up to crazy winds, heavy smoke and scary orange sky over our eastern ridge ~3:30 this morning.  My wife went in to work but I stayed home to man the fort and get personals and the cat ready for hightailing it just in case.  We had a lot of smoke and ash but fortunately no embers. The winds died down by early afternoon but man, was I sweating bullets in the meanwhile, especially when  I saw how easily the fire jumped 101 to hit west Santa Rosa - that could have easily happened here in Black Point with the easterly winds.

In between checking the yard and roof, I was pretty much glued to the tv all day and am just floored by the speed and extent of the destruction, especially from what I saw in Santa Rosa and Napa - just heartbreaking.  The closest call anyone we know of so far was fire taking out structures across from a friend's mom 's house, but we are afraid there are more than likely other friends more severely impacted.

So far three I know lost their homes in Santa Rosa.  Terrible day.

Re: OT: Wildfires - Phogge - 10-09-2017

The 1995 Vision Fire was stopped at our house. A terrible day and a wonderful next  day when we realized that the house survived. Prayers to all who lost, the heroic responders and repose to the souls who didn't make it.

+1 to all. A client had three employees lose their homes. A couple of friends are being evacuated from Grass Valley as it's coming over the ridgeline. Thoughts and prayers.

Could smell the smoke all the way down in San Jose!

My dad lost his home in the Santa Rosa fire. He was awoken by police in the middle of the night and was told to get out immediately. I am so grateful that he was able to get out safely. His neighborhood burned to the ground. A number of his friends also lost their homes. The destruction is awful.

This one really hit me.  Despite living far away, I've spent many days and night in Santa Rosa.  It seemed like a lovely bubble.

So sorry Terry.

My ex was evacuated at 3 a.m. and her building was scorched, but it was saved.  Her brother and his wife had their home burned to the ground and lost everything.  So incredibly sudden and extremely sad.

Re: OT: Wildfires - PalmTree - 10-11-2017

Terry - I'm very glad your dad's safe.

Re: OT: Wildfires - BobK - 10-11-2017

So very sad.    Look for gofundme's.    And contributions to shelters.

Re: OT: Wildfires - BostonCard - 10-11-2017

So sorry for everyone and their families who lost their homes in the fire, not to mention the 17 people and counting who lost their lives.

And lest we forget, three weeks after Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricane Maria, 84% of the island is without power, 37% is without potable water, and 14% of grocery stores are still closed.
