OT: It's really tough to root for McCaffrey - cardcrimson - 10-12-2017

When the leader of the team is such a prima donna. Newton scores the games first TD. His teammates come to congratulate him, he actually shoos them away, finds a camera, poses, then does his superman thing.

Just one of the many reasons the NFL is losing viewers.

Easy to root for Ertz!

Sorry, no, it is not tough to root for McCaffrey.

I don't think Newton is the leader of the Carolina Panthers.

Zach Ertz with two receptions on the night.  Both touchdowns.

McCaffrey is not doing much as a running back (1 carry, -2 yards), but as a receiver he has five catches for 31 yards to go along with a 25-yard punt return.

It's very easy. I'm a life long Bearsssss fan and I can still find a way to root for Montgomery, Murphy, and Martinez even though they play for the most repulsive sports team in world history.

Re: OT: It's really tough to root for McCaffrey - BostonCard - 10-12-2017

TD McCaffrey.  Stanford players have now scored three out of the four touchdowns in the game (Ertz 2, McCaffrey 1).

How about this... McCaffrey had a decent game and scored a TD, but the Panthers lost.  So, everyone should be happy. I'm still waiting for McCaffrey to break out.

I find it tough to root for McCaffrey because life is too busy to watch every Stanford player's success in the NFL, CMAC burned much of my goodwill with his decision to skip the bowl game, and he's failed to break out. I check the box scores and I'll try to watch a few minutes here and there, but I just don't have the bandwidth. At this point, I only really seek out Colts games (when Luck is playing), Seahawks, and Packers. I'll be happy for CMAC's success, but until he becomes must-see TV, I don't see myself going out of the way to watch the Panthers.

What does it take to “break out?” He is second in the NFL in receptions as a rookie behind only AB. His extrapolated 16 game stats would be 99rec for 800 yards, ~6 TD, and 300 rush yds.  I’d call that a breakout rookie season, though admittedly not in the fashion all of us anticipated. It’s not his fault that his team has a poor Oline with a non QBs averaging fewer then 3 ypc.

I hope that CMac’s NFL usage convinces Bryce Love to return for a year to develop a receiving game and enhance his draft stock.

Stanford Eagles 12

Here's a link to McCaffrey's highlights last night:

Not shown above is what appears to be a tackle by McCaffrey after Newton's first interception.  You can see the tackle at about the one minute mark in this Eagles defensive highlights video:

Fair points all. But the other side of the coin is that he's a RB who just got his 100th rushing yard 6 games into the season. His touches in the run game have also dropped steadily, as has his YPC. We can complain that it's not his fault and the OLine stinks, but the Panthers are still running the ball, just with a different back. Yes,he's heavily used in the passing game, but 7.9 yards per catch isn't really setting the world on fire. And he hasn't had any real explosive plays except for on 37 yard catch against the Saints, who everyone seems to have a big game against.

In the end, perhaps it's a qualitative measure. I haven't seen anything from him that makes him must see viewing for the little time I have for the NFL. Other people may take more pleasure from watching him catch 5-15 yard check down receptions than I do or have more time for football viewing.

Don't watch pro football.  Have college football and US soccer to worry about.

Hope all our Stanford men invest their earnings wisely, stay healthy, and have great success post football.

My opinion of Newton, and how he fits within the Panthers organization, is that his attitude , work habits etc..., may be less than ideal.
I guess my own criteria for the role of "team leader" is one who leads by good, productive examples.
You are probably correct that most football fans consider Newton, especially since he plays QB, to be the Panthers current team leader.

Re: OT: It's really tough to root for McCaffrey - Farm93 - 10-13-2017

The Panthers OL was terrible.  CMAC seemed to get a number of quality touches as a receiver and that served a very useful decoy for the Newton keeps.  CMAC might be a problem for an opponent if he gets into the secondary, so the safeties need to honor the potential hand off to CMAC.  However, I keep thinking that this can't continue for much longer if CMAC never gets to the second level as a running back.

Also, Ertz game was solid, but his missed blocking assignment in the 4th quarter almost cost the Eagles the game.  So the 2 TDs may delight fantasy league players, the missed blocking assignment that led to a critical sack will not be overlooked by the staff.

Re: OT: It's really tough to root for McCaffrey - lex24 - 10-13-2017

He did get to the second level. The first level given Carolinas o-line is getting to the LOS.  Carolina has the worst run blocking line in the NFL - according to a metric that looks at defensive penetration. And I think they lead that by a goodly margin.

Stewart had 8 carries for minus 4. Which makes his previous game - 18 carries 21 yards, look good.
Carolina is going to need to rework their running game.

Geaux Cardinal!

Some of my favorite CMac plays his freshman year were his tackles on KORs. He was almost always the first guy there.
