MSoc: Stanford @ UW - washingtonismoney - 10-19-2017

Big game, and an interesting lineup -- Stanford's going with three defenders at the back, something I've never seen from them before.

Stanford up 1-0. Been playing fast and intense. Impressive work.

Oof -- Washington ties it up.

This, of course, is a big game. The margins are fine in a short season and Stanford has only a one-point edge on kal in the conference standings.

Bam, 2-1. Crazy early first half, with a lot of goals and fast end-to-end action.

Stanford finishes the half up 2-1. A curious half. You can think of soccer games being decided by superior strategy, superior skill, or superior physical abilities. In this game, the action was so frenetic the first two didn't apply. But for whatever reason the Stanford players were just that little bit faster in critical moments and produced better shots and opportunities, which naturally converted into goals.

Despite ending a man up, Stanford stumbles into the finish. The team still manages a 2-1 win, which is brobdingnagian, but surrendered some compelling opportunities to Washington (which the Huskies spurned.) Not the kind of performance you like, but the win you need.

Or superior luck.  Not to say that was the case here, but it happens.

Of course. Though I think luck more usually manifests itself in favorable streaks of converting shots into goals, rather than creating shots themselves.
