Some Perspective from another POV - Goose - 10-29-2017

I found the following article to be interesting, partly for what it says about WSU,  partly because it reminds me of some of the discussion on this board, and partly because what it says about Stanford's team. I think it is worth reading, and perhaps a bit instructive  :). Also interesting that Tyler Hilinski also wears #3.

"Luke Falk isn’t going to get better. Tyler Hilinski has two-plus years left, and a much higher ceiling. It’s time to get Hilinski more reps, especially since it was pretty clear Saturday that he isn’t afraid to throw down the field, and he trusts his receivers. It also feels like the receivers trust Hilinski more than Falk at this point, because they’re probably sick and tired of getting open and watching Falk throw a checkdown."

Wow.  Just change the names and virtually that entire paragraph could apply to Chryst and Costello.

Yeah, except Falk's played well against far more than one decent team.

What exactly happened to him? Did - of all teams - DABEARS rattle him so much he lost his confidence? What is this, 2004?

Nope. He has been having problems from the get-go this year. If you believe the article, he never improved from 2015. Not sure I buy that. My read is that the Air Raid risk-reward curve can be hard for any QB to deal with. When things are going well, everything you throw is caught (even if not for a ton of yards). When things don't go well, you get intercepted and take the blame. The difference between those two cases may be difficult to recognize as you take your 3 step drop. Not being analytical and remaining a "gunslinger" may be what is required. Falk now thinks too much according to Leach. We see the same with Chryst sometimes, but on a longer time scale.

Ironically the Air Raid seems like a less-than-great offense for a quarterback. You throw a ton of short passes and get sacked all the time. Who wants to do that?

Well, Leach would say that if you do it right you don't get sacked. However, since he recommend not thinking too much, I think your statement may be the correct conclusion  :).

Well, one thing that happened to him is that he has always been overhyped. That's mostly because people confuse volume with quality.
It's not that he's been bad, just that he's not been "one of the best QBs in college football".

By my eye, he doesn't have a strong arm, doesn't have good pocket presence, and doesn't have enough athleticism to make a play when it's not there. But, he's accurate on short routes, tough, and doesn't usually do stupid things.

He also hasn't improved.
2014  PER = 140.4
2015  PER = 145.9
2016  PER = 145.6
2017  PER = 144.8

Those aren't terrible numbers, but only good. Nationally that ranks  #43,32,30,33.
[In 2014 he didn't play enough to qualify, but that PER would fit in at #43.]

Hilinski looks like a physically more talented guy, at least he is more mobile and has a bigger arm. He was a fairly highly regarded recruit, #43 QB overall, #24 Pro style, according to 214 sports in 2015.

While he may put the ball up for grabs, I also fear he is much more likely to have a monster game against us that Falk would.

I expect we'll see Falk - at least at first.

That is what I would expect from most coaches. However, Leach seems to be quite capable of deciding Falk has "lost it" and going all in on #3. I give this a better than 40% chance. It may depend a lot on how Falk reacted to being benched.
