The 800 lb....check that...the 200 lb. gorilla in the room - Redrum - 10-30-2017

What's the story with Bryce?  T'was sobering to see him in a boot at OSU.  Any chance he can go Saturday?  So far, checking mainstream media no help at all.  Would you hold him out (what could be) an extra week to see if he came back stronger, more Bryce-like?

I don't know, but until he's back on the field, hopefully this can tidy us over:

The word from someone in the know is that he has a *HIGH* ankle sprain, which typically has a 3-6 week timetable. He was never going to play against OSU, but I can't fault Shaw for keeping that secret until gamete to keep Oregon St on their toes. Washington St will be just about 3 weeks from the injury so I'd say there's a slight chance he'll be out there.

Well, supposedly Scarlett was not chopped liver in HS - Redrum - 10-30-2017

Neither was Speights.  Maybe they need more time to develop timing and technique.  Likewise the staff needs to get a better feel for what kind of plays/ attack have the best chance of succeeding.  That's pretty obvious, but surely neither of those back-ups is a complete bust.  We got lucky beyond all belief with Bryce Love. But now the staff has got to figure out how to win without his gift.  It's why they earn the big bucks compared to HS coaches. Having a QB who forces opponents' defenses to respect a passing attack might be a good start.  I'd sit Love for another game and evaluate with an objective, caring eye for the next.  He should play vs. Kal if only because we need to emphatically pimp-slap those guys.

If you believe WSU will lose the Apple Cup - which I do - then the Stanford-WSU game is of less importance in conference race than one might normally believe.  If you combine that with the fact that Love is still hobbled, then I'd be surprised if he plays against WSU.

And this is one of the main reasons I expect WSU to smoke Stanford on Saturday.  Stanford's best chance for staying competitive this week is turmoil in the Palouse locker room.  Of course, I have no clue if there is/will be any such dysfunction . . . but hope springs eternal.

BTW, the above does not rule out the possibility of Stanford rebounding to beat UW and Cal.  Will be tough.  But not impossible, especially if (i) Love is able to come back at 100%, and (ii) the QB situation is figured out.

That sounds credible and bums me out.  Every injury is different, but the last time we saw him in a walking boot was at the open scrimmage in 2016 (I looked it up - 8/18/16).  He proceeded to skip the KSU game on 9/2 but carried the ball 11 times for 51 yards against SC on 9/17.

Once the boot comes off, it seems like he’ll need at least another week to regain strength and flexibility in the joint.  (Disclaimer - I’m not a physician.)  So an astute question for Shaw tomorrow would be whether the boot is off yet, even though he probably wouldn’t answer it.

Average humans are expected to recover from high ankle sprains in 3-6 weeks, but among D1 football players, the average recovery is shorter according to this study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3497944/.

It says that the mean time to return to unrestricted play is 15.5 days +/- 9.5 days.  But it’s worse (19.6 days average) if he has something called an “intraosseous membrane tear”.  I also read somewhere that NFL players miss an average of 2.5 games with high ankle sprains.

In any case, without knowing the severity, Love seems questionable for WSU and probable for UW.  I have no data but the general averages are probably less misleading than whatever Shaw will offer to the media tomorrow.Â
