LOVED how he managed his pitching staff.

I was the Daily beat writer for the baseball team when he was behind the plate at Sunken Diamond. I remember my buddy JJ, who was the stadium announcer, would say when Hinch came to the plate to bat...
"The catcher ... AYEEE JAYEEEE HINCH!"
AJ is a really, really good guy. Proud to have him as a Stanford grad.

Dodgers couldnt win. The first WS Willie Mays MVP award could not go to a Dodger.

Mays was my father's favorite player and one of my favorites. I think he was probably the second best player all-time (have to give the nod to Babe Ruth who both pitched and hit at the highest level). But Mays was terrible in the world series, with a .589 OPS. He never hit an HR in 78 WS plate appearances.
Barry Bonds has the best career WS OPS of any player at 1.994. I realize that there might be political problems naming the award after a PEDS user, so we might consider one of the next nine:
2. Willie Aikens 1.638 26 PA
3. Amos Otis 1.495 26 PA
4. George Springer 1.471 34 PA
5. David Ortiz 1.372 59 PA
6. Troy Glaus 1.313 30 PA
7. Phil Garner 1.238 28 PA
8. Lou Gehrig 1.214 150 PA
9. Babe Ruth 1.214 167 PA
10. Hideki Matsui 1.213 41 PA

Those were great days. As Sunken Diamond's PA announcer myself in '95 and '96, it was my pleasure to announce his name, too. Especially since A.J. & I are also proud graduates of Midwest City High School! I'm sure there are a lot of happy people back in Midwest City, Oklahoma right now.
Super awesome to watch his journey over the years, even when it got a bit rocky (his disastrous first managerial experience with Arizona). Always wonderful to see great things happen to genuinely good people.

Troy, I asked Darryl Stephens one time (Stanford baseball team in my era, early 80s) who was the best player he ever saw. He named another Midwest City Bomber (and World Series champ) - Joe Carter.

I believe Joe Carter graduated from Millwood High School.

DC 86, thank you for the correction. I remember him being from Midwest City (though that may be wrong too), but you are right that he went to Oklahoma City Millwood.
I am reminded of another star from Midwest City (whom I am pretty sure was a Bomber), Matt Kemp.
I am always intrigued at the baseball talent that comes out of Oklahoma.

Quote:I will run through a wall for that guy any day, Series MVP George Springer said.
and later
Quote:For him to have my back, it means the world to me. And Ill always have his back, Springer said. And that just shows who he is.
Some good quotes from Hinch as well.
