Shaw can`t see, move to press box -
PAsportsfan - 11-05-2017
I`ve figured it out! Shaw is not stubborn by sticking to his plan, he just has the worst possible view of the action on the field and needs to move to the press box. How else can you explain not replacing KC last week and all the same running plays this week? The failure over the YEARS to adjust IN GAME?
Why are offensive coordinators positioned there??? Shaw calls the plays, MOVE UP or give up the play calling!
What would Stanford lose by not having Shaw on the sideline?
-motivate the players? Nope, not his job (per Shaw)
-get on the officials? Nope, not MR. Nice Guy (ask Lex)

I don't know of a single head coach who isn't on the sideline. However, your point is well-taken. The OC should be calling the plays, making the adjustments, etc. But that problem is as much about who our OC is as it is our stubborn HC who won't give up the play calling.

Brady Hoke was on the sideline at Michigan but didn't wear a headset. He was lost standing on the sideline and often looked like he was in the way of people trying to do their job.

There have been coaches that stayed in the press box.

The only head coach that I can think of who was in the press box was Joe Paterno when he was recovering from a broken leg, and he wasn't calling plays.

I know you are making a sarcastic jest, but this thought actually crossed my mind when watching the game. "Is it possible that Shaw somehow can't see what the TV audience is seeing--that he somehow doesn't know that there are defensive linemen in the backfield on every first down?" I could never entirely dismiss that silly nagging suspicion, since it would have explained what otherwise seemed to be completely irrational.

Well
somebody (Pritchard? I think Bloomgren is on the sideline isn't he?) is up there telling him that defensive linemen are in the backfield on every first down.
Only coaches I recall coaching from the box were due to health/disability or punishment. Bobby Ross coached from upstairs when he was at Maryland because he grabbed a referee the previous game. Believe it was against UNC. Maryland was an ACC kingpin at the time and they were playing Clemson with a lot on the line. Why I can remember this (c. 1986 and a game I never cared about), but not that job code from this morning, is one of life's great mysteries.
There are several head coaches calling plays, and I think they all do it from the sideline.

It is our right (not necessarily right) to blame someone for a loss.

That kind of DL aggressiveness leads to a rash of screen passes in 99% of all football games ever played. Given the fact that Stanford, essentially, has no screen game, I am surprised that all of the teams that we play don't simply flood the gaps. That strategy is usually high risk, but not with Stanford's offensive approach. There is a reason that our most successful passing play went to Marx--that is what WSU was giving us.
