Remember 1982! - JohnR34231 - 11-05-2017

I know everyone would like to forget it because of Big Game. However, there were some high points.
Primary one was when at 4-3, we faced an undefeated and #1 ranked Washington team coming into Stanford Stadium. We came away with a 43-31 victory, so there is a precedent for us doing well on Friday.
Now if we could only find a way to bring back John Elway.

Re: Remember 1982! - Papa John - 11-06-2017

I was at that 1982 win versus the Huskies, JPRI. And earlier that year we beat The Ohio State University at Columbus. Unfortunately, we lost our last three in 1982, so maybe we should remember 1971 instead? That year Stanford lost a heartbreaker to Duke but beat UW the next week and went on to win the conference.

Re: Remember 1982! - CornFed - 11-06-2017

I was blissfully present in 1971 as well.  A truly great season; perhaps not fully-appreciated because it lives in the shadow of memories of the 1970 season.  Don Bunce was a remarkable human being.

The Last Game (Elway Won at Stanford) - Duck Tears - 11-06-2017

Mike Dotterer lamented, years later, how the '82 team "celebrated like we won the Rose Bowl" that day.

If you began following Stanford football in the early '80s, you have a special hatred for the song "Tequila," (a Washington marching band staple).

The Huskies back then were just loaded. They won the conference twice (1980, 1981). Only losses in the Apple Cup (1982, 1983) denied them a Rose Bowl four-peat. In 1984 they spent over a month ranked No. 1 before going 11-1 and winning the Orange Bowl -- a first for a Pac-10 team -- over Oklahoma.

Don James loaded his roster with their home state's best players. He sprinkled it with lots of California recruits (Lonzel Hill, Jacque Robinson, Reggie Rogers, Vince Newsome), some questionable characters among them.

After 1982, Stanford didn't beat Washington until 1994...and didn't do it again until 2004...while going 31 years (1975-2006) between wins at Husky Stadium.

David Shaw did some amazing things in his first five seasons (54-14 / .794 winning percentage) here. The 1980-1984 seasons amounted to Don James' best five-year run (48-12 / .800) in Seattle.

Re: Remember 1982! - Spiny_Norman - 11-06-2017

I was in Stanford Stadium that Halloween weekend as well in 1982. I still have the Sports Illustrated with Elway on the cover.  It's a fun trip into the past to read the cover story by Ron Fimrite - https://www.si.com/vault/1982/11/08/628030/oh-what-a-notable-victory

The 1982 win was especially sweet after Washington had beat Stanford in Stanford Stadium in 1980 on a FG by Chuck Nelson on the last play of the game, 27-24. Half of the Pac 10 was on probation in 1980 including U.SC and UCLA. Stanford and Washington were the top teams that were still eligible.  That loss to UW effectively killed Stanford's shot at a conference championship and Rose Bowl berth.

Colorado, Stanford and USC (twice) won the Orange Bowl subsequent to Washington in 1982.

TRIVIA: what was the only West coast football team to win the Orange Bowl before Washington in 1985?

Right.  Beat Bear Bryant's Kentucky Wildcats 21-13.  Coach Bryant had his team doing two-a-day practices every single day except Christmas day and New Year's eve.

Re: Remember 1982! - Papa John - 11-06-2017

Also, I'm pretty sure that John Elway's last game at Stanford Stadium was the East-West Shrine Game in January 1983. I was there and saw him win MVP, although I think his team lost.

I remember him at a spring game after that when the current team played a team of alums, but he was still an NFL player so he coached instead of played.

Loved that game against Udub.  The best part of the fan reaction was when some of our fans ran over to the Washington section and stole the banner that read "Every Dog Has His Day."  The student section went pretty wild when they paraded it over to our section.  Hopefully, Friday will bring a similar feeling of joy to our side.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Vinnie White's game-clinching punt return in Q4 is still the best I've ever seen by a Stanford player.

Highly memorable even 35 years later; it seemed like VW was never running at full speed on the return, but he kept slipping tacklers all the way down the field, twisting and turning and somehow going all the way.

I graduated the year before, but watched this amazing game from grad school in Chicago.  Somewhere or another I watched a complete replay of the game on the web, but all I can find right now are these highlights.

I'm watching the game right now on Pac 12 Bay Area channel.  Elway looks amazing...
