Mid-season McCaffrey Stats -
cardcrimson - 11-05-2017
49 carries, 117 yards, 2.4 per carry
49 receptions, 378 yards, 7.7 per catch
3 kickoff returns, 58 yards, 19.3 per return
18 punt returns, 130 yards, 7.2 per return
Surprising, to say the least.

Why surprising... the NFL is littered with guys who lit it up in college and never adjusted to the faster and stronger game in the NFL.
Moreover, slowly but surely McCaffrey is improving. He had his best game today, with 66 yards on 4.4 ypc and a TD rushing plus another 28 yards on 5 receptions receiving. i think he now has three touchdowns in his last three games. The tragectory is positive.

I agree with BC, his comfort level is rising and the improvement is noticeable-he was fun to watch today. Jonathan Stewart fumbling twice may have led to more touches for CMac because he was in the mix more than I have seen him all year.
Additionally, the Carolina coaching staff appears to be getting more dialed in with plays specifically designed for his skill set. I hope Shaw and Bloomgren were watching; they could use some innovation with their stable of running backs.

Also, according to Panthers fans their OL has been hot garbage this year. I know every team says that in the NFL, but Stewart's rushing ypc is something like 1.9, and it's not like he's a garbage back. Plus Newton started the year injured, etc.
Plenty of rookie RBs start off slow. The ones that explode are usually put into a better position than McCaffrey was early in the year.

Jonathan Stewart is a solid if unspectacular back, and he cant get anything going behind that Oline as well. Put Cook and Fournette back there, and i doubt you see much of a difference. Even if you ignore his rushing stats, Cmac is on pace for almost 100 receptions, 750 receiving yards, and 6tds. While a lot of those receptions are checkdowns, those are still extremely impressive stats, especially for a Rookie. Some improvement on the OL and he could be a force to be reminded with for years to come.

If McCaffrey breaks 90 receptions, he will have the second most receptions of any rookie of all time. Hes a bit off the pace of Anquan Boldins 102 though.

Circumstances. Carolina is not the type of offense in which I would expect him to thrive. What Newton does well is throw the ball down field and run. He is not a good intermediate and short pastor. Another case in point today was an easy throw to McCaffrey which wouldve been a touchdown. He threw it behind him. He had his best rushing game today so maybe he will have a better second half. But man I wish he was on a team like New Orleans with a quarterback that could really take advantage of his skills.
I do know one thing Carolinas offense is much better when he is on the field then when he is not.

Okay. Seven months ago, just before the draft, what do you think the majority of folks here would have thought his stats would have been at the half way point of the season? I'd bet zero would have guessed less than a hundred and twenty yards rushing, total, over eight games. Regardless of the reasons, I'm surprised. Then again, silly me, I was stunned that Love only had six touches for four yards in the second half yesterday.

This is what I see as well. I think McCaffrey is playing very well. No, he won't win ROY, but I'm more confident now than I was on Draft Day that he'll have a multiple-Pro Bowl career.

I guess his dad is, though....especially with that $400K or whatever it was from the Auburn boosters.

What's not captured in these stats are the opportunities he's created for the offense when used as a decoy.
