The best performances of the Shaw/Harbaugh era - washingtonismoney - 11-11-2017

Shaw was asked post-game whether this was the best game of his career, which I thought was overreaction and recency bias on the few different levels. (Shaw quite reasonably argued that it wasn't as it was just a regular-season game.) But in some ways the questioner isn't wrong either. Most ranking systems have "game score" components, where they rate each performance on (something like a 0-100 scale). That allows for apples-to-apples comparisons, since they're typically (theoretically) adjusted for opponent quality, etc., with the theory being you can give of exceedingly large proportions credit to a stomping of a high-quality opponent. So, using ESPN's FPI, here are the top ten performances of the Shaw/Harbaugh era. Tie goes to postseason games:

2013 @ASU (champ game) 98
2013 vs Oregon 98
2014 @UCLA 98
2017 vs UW 97
2013 vs ASU 97
2012 @ Oregon 97
2009 SC 97
2010 vs Virginia Tech (Orange Bowl) 96
2015 vs SC (champ game) 96
2016 vs SC 96
2015 @ SC (regular season) 96
2010 @ND  96

Honorable mention:
2012 @UCLA (regular season) 95
2011 @ SC 95
2015 vs UCLA 94
2010 Big Game 94

(Note: I assume different ranking systems have different views. I used ESPN's FPI not because I think it's a better rating system, but because it's pretty quick to navigate.)

EDIT: prompted by stupac, I've updated the list.

Interesting that only two of those are under Harbaugh.

Oh, yeah, I stopped at 2010 out of laziness. 2009 @SC was a 97, so he'd have three top ten performances in there with that included. 2010 Big Game (94) also belongs in the "Honorable Mentions" category.

That makes sense, I figured 2009 would have to have one or two.

Yeah, Oregon is rated as a 93, so just below my arbitrary cut-off of 94 for honorable mention.

Anyway, I guess my overall points from this exercise are:
1) Stanford's had a lot of great games these past eight years!
2) Last night really was one of the best Stanford performances of this run
3) Still, not the very best and Shaw's bias to postseason performances is perfectly fair

Shaw also thought the Pac-12 Championship game win at ASU was the best win of his career.

Re: The best performances of the Shaw/Harbaugh era - yvonne - 11-11-2017

When does it cease to be the Harbaugh/Shaw era and become the Shaw era? Should we begin talking about the John Ralston/Jack Christiansen era?

I think the Iowa Rose Bowl belongs somewhere.

I wonder if that was hurt by the fact that most advanced stats saw through the Hawkeyes and that we kinda let up in the second half. Still, it scored a 92. We had a lot of 90+ performances in that season, unsurprisingly.

Yeah, I'm personally biased towards the 2013 Oregon performance.

Is the Sagrada Familia still Gaudi's cathedral? I think on some level it'll always be Harbaugh's era, however diminished his role will appear as time passes.

That was definitely a satisfying performance. But you have to remember that ratings system thought Iowa sucked that year. So even though it was an epic beatdown, it only warranted a 92.
