WVB: Stanford 3 WSU 1 -

Cardinal salvaged what could've been a lost weekend in the northwest with a gritty and not-very-pretty win in the Palouse, -losing the first 19-25 before gutting out a 32-30, 25-16, 25-21 win.
Serving again an issue - 3 aces against 13 services errors. Outblocked and had 24 attack errors - WSU only hit .169 and took us to four sets. Plummer with 9 and Merete with 7 (to hit -.056 for the match).
McClure and Fitzmorris had much better matches, in part making up for Lutz and Plummer's sub-par nights. Also much better serve receive, at least as far as not giving up aces, than against the Huskies - but it didn't look like we were getting a lot of in-system passes to Gray. A lot of the serve receive passes were well off the net.
That being said, getting a win in the Palouse, after the hard match in Seattle, is a relief. LA schools next, then Utah, all at home, followed by the road finale in Berkeley. If Stanford doesn't win out, they really could lose out on a #1 seed and regional preference to Maples.

We had been undefeated in conference play before the UW loss. Did the Huskies expose a weakness (and to a lesser extent, WSU tonight)? Or did we just have a bad couple games?

Not really. Serve and serve receive are the two biggest areas of variability, and Stanford had a bad weekend for them, especially against UW, who served amazingly well (10 aces, 4 errors to Stanford's 14 errors to 5 aces).
Tonight actually was an example of a good night for what had been Stanford's biggest weakness - rotation 4, when the frontline is Gray, McClure, and Fitzmorris, with Plummer hitting center back. That rotation has killed us all year long - UW had several very important scoring runs where they single-blocked McClure, and had two people camped out on the Fitzmorris backslide who stayed at home until they were sure the set wasn't going to Plummer. But tonight it has a better go of it.
I am wondering if Plummer needs some relief. She's still looking like that virus she's been suffering from is sapping her energy a bit.

And in the category of things that REALLY suck (and thank you Pac-12!)
Stanford women's volleyball plays next week, not next weekend, against $C and UCLA. Back to back. On Wednesday and Thursday nights. On short rest, after the hardest road trip (travel + play) of the season. Oh, and for both opponents, they'll be coming off Th-Sat home weekends against Utah and Colorado.
And then follows it up with a midweek game against Utah the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
Thanks Larry!
How about a simple idea like Rivalry Wednesday - Wednesday matches are filled in by geographic rivals each week, with the availability of a non-conference slot that weekend. UW had the back to back last week - but the second match was C.al, who is one of the three worst teams in the conference.
