Random musing...my expectations for Stanford football - TreesAndBirds - 11-12-2017
We talk a lot about how our expectations for Stanford football have changed. Here are my current expectations/grades for season results ( obviously cant cover every scenario). They are a lot different (higher) than the early 80s when I was in school.
Dont qualify for a bowl game F
Qualify for a bowl game.   D
Qualify for a bowl and win
  Big Game, or win a bowl
  game.              C/C+ (depends on bowl quality)
Win a bowl game and win
   Big Game.           C+/ B- (depends on bowl quality)
Win Pac12NÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â B
Win Pac12 N and bowl game. B+
Win Pac12.              A
Win Pac-12 and bowl game. A+
Play in CFB playoffs.       A+
Win CFB playoff game      A++
Win CFB championship.     Priceless
Win H award.            N/A
Of course all this assumes that our guys continue to show sportsmanship on the field, are serious students, and I dont read about them in police logs.

You'll notice that "Qualify for a bowl game" gets a D, which Elway never had.

His lifetime record even throwing out the screw of 82 was still below 500. I mean, he would have gotten into a bowl if the play had been ruled correctly, but barely. And he might have snuck into a bowl at 6-5 in 1980, but still at best he had a borderline case.
More of Elways problems had to do with the fact that he was on teams with crap for defense than with the era.

It's losing the championship game and then losing the bowl game that is a plain B. That makes for an above average year, but not an excellent year. But reasonable minds can differ :)
To be clear though, I am a fan regardless of record, so long as the guys continue to exhibit the sportsmanship, academic and integrity traits listed at the end of the post. The Dawkins years proved that in MBB :(

It's losing the championship game and then losing the bowl game that is a plain B. That makes for an above average year, but not an excellent year. But reasonable minds can differ :)

Maybe it should just be pass or fail, with the following criteria:
Any year we lose to Cal = fail*
Bowl eligible = pass
Not bowl eligible, but beat Cal = pass
*Even if we go on to win the National Championship

good idea! I like pass/fail/honors, with honors reserved for winning P12 championship or winning a bowl game.
(but keep in mind that my wife would not describe my mind as "reasonable")
