Hey everyone,
Not sure who may or may not remember me, but ND fan here. Comin around to talk a little football, third year in a row i believe. Just to kinda summarize, i don't come around to talk a bunch of crap, or act like a troll on someone else's board. I get annoyed with ND forums, so for bigger games each year ill bounce around to opposing team boards. Usually i will leave my comments to only the thread i create, but will read others just to reference some information. Alright, with that out of the way, anyone up for talking about the game?
i know we each have another game in between ours, and that should not be overlooked, but your not gonna find a lot of navy chat, and i think Stanford should take care of ×ÉÉ. So if you are up for a little early talk, so am i.
Trying to wash the taste from that ugly miami game out of my mouth. I have had a hard time trying to break down this Stanford team. I have went back and forth between all season long thinking that ND should be able to win comfortably, to surprised at how good they are. I can give a breakdown of ND, but figured i would wait and see if the chat starts rolling before i spend the time on it.
Thoughts, questions for me?
Thanks and good luck.

We share much of your confusion and frustration. What is clear is that Stanford at home is 4-0 and a top-10 team, beating then #9 Washington, and handily beating Oregon, UCLA, and ASU, while Stanford on the road is a mediocre team, at best, beating Oregon State (barely) and Utah, while losing to USC, Washington State, and San Diego State.
Thankfully for us this game is at home, where I have ever hope that we will give you a run for your money.
I guess my biggest question for you, and sorry to make you re-live your nightmare, was... what happened on Saturday? Was it just a question of a good team having itself a bad day against another good team, or did Miami expose a fundamental weakness?

We have a critical game this Saturday against our biggest rival -- Cal. After that, we'll talk.

You're not alone in being confused about this team. The main thing we've been able to figure out is that the team is way, way better at home. Most teams are, but we have a particularly brobdingnagian split.
Going by my quick-and-easy ranking method of "net yards per play" (offensive minus defensive yards per play) and separating out home/away, ND would be a big favorite at home (1.68 vs 0.82), but we're favorites at home (1.04 vs 0.94).
Interestingly, this is a big skewed by both of our teams' last games. Stanford actually had a negative split despite winning, bringing down our average, and before last week ND is close to even home vs away.
So in my mind it depends a lot on which team shows up for both sides. We could get an all-time classic (good team shows up for both), blowout in either direction (good vs bad), or sloppy, mistake-filled game (both bad). How you handicap the game depends a lot on what probabilities you put to those 4 options.

O, im not sure if we will really know what saturday was until after Stanford... I think ND is a good team, but not a top 5 team. And i really thought that before the miami game. But Saturday, was just awful. They weren't prepared and just went out their a laid an egg. I think (or at least like to think) on a different day, that is a competitive game. I have never seen a team fold like that due to the environment its in. And once things started to go a little bad, there was no recovering from it. IMO, the gap between the two teams was no 33 pts. But that is the way the game played out, so now it will be a question if they can swallow that and move on, or if they are going to let it ruin their season.
There were a lot of flaws exposed as well. Although, i think most people who could look at that team honestly could identify them before. The Lt, mcglinchey, who has been anointed a top tackle in this draft, got beat all day long. If you want the games through out the year though, it shouldn't come as a surprise. He is really good against the run, but if you have a speed rush on the outside, he is not fast enough. Also, this defense wins by fundamentals, not skill. The issue is their lack of skill leaves the middle of the field open, either for QB run or pass. Miami was very good at all the things ND struggled with. Now if you get a team that can't do those things very well, i.e. michigan state or usc, then ND goes out and looks like a top team.

Hey NDIrish. Now we can talk. A lot has changed since your last post. ND got drilled by the U and squeaked by Navy. How motivated will they be at Stanford? Love might not play. How's the Irish injury situation?

Vegas line opens with ND as a 1.5 pt favorite and grows to 2-2.5.
ESPN predictor is rating it at 50/50.
To be honest, with the current status of our defense and Bryce's injuries, I'm surprised were not 3-7 point dogs, at home. I haven't followed ND recently though, so maybe they're injured as well?

Yeah, we really have no business playing Love unless he's at 100% which is doubtful.

IMO, there is no way Love will be at 100% so if that's the deciding factor he definitely won't play.
Which means, I suppose, that we will probably lose. Hope springs eternal, though.

Hey everyone, sorry for comin on early. I clearly was still in lala land after the beat down from miami and wasn't truly thinking about the rivalry between cal and stanford. Glad to see you guys came out with the W.
I would say a 50/50 game is probably about right. ND was playing really well for a while, against some good opponents, but has been struggling of late. Its like they just didn't have the stamina for the entire season. They are a little banged up, most should play, but maybe not at 100%. EQ being out is big, i would guess he wont play, very nasty hit, but given the limited potential of the passing game, i wouldn't say its brobdingnagian.Â
I was wondering about Bryce. i watched the beginning of the cal game and then the end and noticed he wasn't in, but wasn't sure why. Same injury he has had for awhile, or something new?
i am going to try and find some time today or tomorrow and give a breakdown on ND, but unfortunately due to my work/personal life right now, i won't be able to engage in the full on chat that i usually enjoy.
In short, ND is a pretty good team that has had a very tough schedule. They were playing extremely fundamental defense that was aiding in their victories, but have lost that the last 3 games. Although, i am pretty sure they held navy to season lows for yards/points. The offense is up and down, they had made a name for themselves on running the ball, although they need solid QB play to open that up. I think that has more to do with it then anything. Wimbush has a ton of ability, but he seems to not be able to get out of his head this year. He can throw it a mile and make some really good throws, but just inconsistent at this point. If ND can get back to basics that helped them handily beat MSU, NC State and USC, i feel pretty good. I am hoping Miami is the odd ball game. they aren't as bad as what they showed, i think they just got kicked in the teeth early and shrunk from there. They missed a brobdingnagian TD early, and that was the only life you saw for a couple quarters.Â
Ill throw out some more later, good luck and enjoy the game if you are going.
