I thought men's soccer was ranked 3rd. How did we end up seeded 9th?

Their RPI coming in was 12th, despite being 3rd in the polls.

A pretty brutal path awaits.  Sure, a first round bye and a home game against the winner of Pacific and Cal State Fullerton, but then it would be a road game at 8th-seeded Clemson (who is ranked #5), followed by a road game at top-ranked and top-seeded Wake Forest--all just to get to the College Cup.

Full bracket - http://www.ncaa.com/interactive-bracket/soccer-men/d1

On Sunday, Stanford hosts winner of UOP vs Fullerton.  Winner of that match could travel to #8 seed Clemson for Round of 16 match assuming they win.

Overall #1 seed is last year's runner up Wake Forest.  ACC seeded 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 11 and 12.  Those with a good memory may recall that Stanford defeated 4 straight ACC teams in last year's tournament (plus a 2nd round defeat of UOP) on the way to the title.

It is an extraordinarily tough bracket.  And Stanford can't control the fact that the rest of the western teams on their schedule did not have good seasons. But they shouldn't have lost to Tulsa and St. Louis.

That said, the committee absolutely hammered the western teams - the only teams from west of the Rockies other than Stanford ALL play each other in the first round - and the winner of one of those matches plays Stanford in the second.  The other two, Washington-Seattle U winner plays at #5 Akron, and C.al-USF winner plays at #4 Louisville.

And the regionalization is strong with this bracket - it looks like a lot of the seed lines were adjusted just slightly so that the potential sweet 16 and Elite 8 pairings are geographically concentrated (Akron/UND/Michigan/Louisville, Mich St/Western/Michigan/Dartmouth/Indiana, Duke/Virginia/Georgetown/North/Carolina, and Wake Forest/VCU/Clemson/Stanford) - two midwest and two ACC regions, with Stanford and Dartmouth the only outliers.

The committee is doing whatever they can to prevent a 3peat.  What a brutal bracket for Stanford.  I find it interesting that Stanford is seeded 9th with a much better record than last yearʻs team.  Last yearʻs record before the tournament was 10-3-5 and seeded 5th.

This team has the hunger, grit, power, and talent to win it all.Â
