UW cleans up - washingtonismoney - 04-30-2010

Washington secured the commitments of Terrences Jones and Ross. Jones is a fringe one-and-done guy, so Washington is the presumptive favorite in the Pac-10 next year and might even do some damage in the tournament. Hurts us somewhat, as I was hoping for a true chaos scenario with no dominant teams.

Re: UW cleans up - bpower - 05-02-2010

As much as I\'d love for this to be true, only Terrence Ross has signed his LOI.

Terrence Jones, after announcing "The school I am pretty much attending is... the University of Washington" (pretty much?  will he not be going to class?) backed away from signing immediately after the press conference.  Purportedly Calipari called him after he picked UW and guilt-tripped him into reconsidering.

And, of course, it\'s now an NCAA quiet period, so Romar doesn\'t have an opportunity to put the hard sell on.

Blah.

Oh, and hey everyone.  I\'m not a Stanford alum, but I know a few, and I promise I\'m not, uh, overly dogmatic about my squad.  I grew up in Oakland and have attended my share of LSJU victories over your hated rivals.  Viva la cardinal.

Re: UW cleans up - Leftcoast - 05-02-2010

Thanks for the update, Token Dawg.

You guys aren\'t THAT hated.   Now if your name ended with "Troy" or "Bear", well that would be a different story.   Actually, were pretty friendly to most who come with goodwill around here.

Re: UW cleans up - bpower - 05-02-2010

Ha - fortunately no, my name is not Tyrone.  I suspect have more enmity for that guy than do most of you, though he never ran up the score on UW on senior day (as george and ratmandoo persist in reminding me).  TW\'s only real accomplishment was in delivering one J. Locker, esq., or as he\'s known around here "the QB picked after Luck in the 2011 draft", right?   ;)

Still no firm news on Terrence Jones for us Husky faithful, but fortunately there\'s no evidence that Worldwide Wes is in Portland.

Quote:or as he\'s known around here "the QB picked after Luck in the 2011 draft"

While it is always nice to get lots of pre-season hype, I think we will get a much more accurate sense of AL\'s potential once his first non-toby-aided season begins.  JL on the other hand has had a very impressive career surrounded by virtually no supporting cast.  Except for the one on his hand after that 2008 loss (one of many reasons why your vitriol for our former coach is more justified than mine.)

I think you\'ll find that most of us hope that Luck has the same kind of love for Stanford that Locker has demonstrated for the University of Washington -- foregoing a number one pick to come back for his SENIOR season.

Getting back to the original subject, with or without Terrence Jones, it\'s hard to see how the Huskies won\'t be a favorite to win the Pac 10 next year.

Re: UW cleans up - Pastor - 05-03-2010

Which brings up another good question...is it beneficial to a team and program to have these one and done guys?  Or long term is it harmful to team choesiveness and the program (see UNC)?

Re: UW cleans up - bpower - 05-03-2010

Certainly there are examples of transcendent freshmen talents that elevate their teams to pretty successful seasons (John Wall, Carmelo Anthony, Greg Oden/Mike Conley, Evan Turner, etc), but I think it depends on how well their style meshes with the rest of the team.

An example from UW recent history is Spencer Hawes who, as a relatively plodding dude, forced the Huskies to play a different brand of basketball than the pressure defense / high speed offense they\'d been playing with Nate and Roy.  That team had very little cohesiveness, and I wasn\'t sorry to see Spencer jet for Sacramento.

I almost always prefer a guy who intends to stick around at least two years, but I admit I can talk myself into any potential prospect.  "Well, Jones\'ll *probably* go pro after one year, but maybe he\'ll find that he loves his freshmen seminars *so much* that he\'ll commit to three more years.  Yeah, that\'s probably what\'ll happen."

Terrence Ross, assuming he qualifies, should be a four year guy.

Man, thank god we don\'t have Stanford academic requirements at UW.

Re: UW cleans up - washingtonismoney - 05-03-2010

I don\'t think Evan Turner was a one-and-done guy; in fact, he was pretty lightly recruited coming out of Chicago.

In terms of the theoretical debate, I think like a lot of things you need a mix. It\'s not good what Kentucky\'s doing, constantly cycling guys, because there\'s a lot of variance involved. The recruiting services for basketball are more accurate than their football counterparts, I think, but there\'s still uncertainty involved. And cycling through multiplies your uncertainty. What if Kentucky or UNC gets a class full of DeMarcus Cousins? You can handle one, but more than one is tough. Nevertheless, if you\'re looking at a Durant or Oden level talent, that\'s a significant edge for your team that other team\'s just won\'t be able to replicate. There just aren\'t too many three- or four-year guys who have the skills that Terrence Jones has, and that could make the difference between a Sweet Sixteen run and an Elite Eight or further run.

Re: UW cleans up - bpower - 05-04-2010

Right - I wasn\'t trying to imply that Turner was expected to go one-and-done, just that the net impact of a one year freshman can obviously be substantial.

That said, I agree with the rest of your post - teams that sustain their success over the long term have succession plans where players develop over two or three years.  Kentucky\'s unlikely to do anywhere near as well next season, particularly if they don\'t get Jones, because there won\'t have been any continuity from last year\'s team.

Re: UW cleans up - bpower - 05-04-2010

Oh, and still no news regarding Jones, but Calipari\'s been out in the press defending his team\'s SEC-worst GPA of 2.025, and claiming that he doesn\'t contact kids once they\'ve verbally committed, despite clear evidence to the contrary on Friday.

Re: UW cleans up - bpower - 05-19-2010

And... Jones signed with Kentucky today, meaning that Calipari has now swiped two verbal commits from the Huskies this year alone, both of them top-25 recruits.

I now hate Kentucky even more than I already did - which means that the quality of my loathing approaches the burning intensity of our sun.  Ducks and Cougars can\'t compare.

Re: UW cleans up - fullmetal - 05-19-2010

For the good of college basketball, Calipari needs to be sanctioned.

Marvelous bit of writing there, slide.  Good find - Redrum - 05-20-2010

(I hope garvin takes the compliment)..The writing was garvin-esque good.   "(disappeared) like a dead pharaoh fallen out of favor or a general who displeased Stalin".

I just love literate people.

Pierce is a fantastic writer - he recently wrote a book, Idiot America, that I\'d highly recommend (though not to any fans of the Hoover Institution, as it\'s an unabashedly liberal tome.)

He\'s 83% of the reason I read Esquire.
