Some good stuff there. And he is absolutely right on third down.
On the season, Washington is first and Stanford fourth in third down conversions (46% and 42%, respectively).
Washington is third and Stanford ninth in third down conversions allowed (33% vs. 43%).
On Friday, Stanford converted 10/18 (56% of third downs). Washington converted 2/8 (25%). Both of those conversions were in their first two drives.

As a theoretical exercise, which current FBS head coach would be Stanford's first choice if David Shaw was not head coach?
Assuming that you can't go home again (meaning Harbaugh) I think Chris Petersen would be at the top of the list.
There are only a handful of proven winners at power 5 schools, and the majority would not be good fits for Stanford in terms of commitment to academics and running a clean program.

From 2011, fwiw:
Quote: Stanford has notified Boise State it would like to speak with Broncos coach Chris Petersen about replacing Jim Harbaugh, a person close to the situation told ESPN's Joe Schad on Saturday.

I can't speak for whether CP would be a good "fit" at Stanford and would be able to negotiate the balance of academics and athletics. But I don't think I would want to revisit the chaos of Harbaugh. If the program is in good condition (i.e., not struggling a la 2002-2006), I would prefer to have someone with a little less "personality" at the helm.

Not disagreeing with above comments, just sharing this additional comment that Petersen apparently made...

Has targeting ever been called on an offensive player? If the NCAA chooses to do that, I'm supportive, but don't think I would make a bang-bang play like that a test case. I think the Pac12 would be just re-affirming how it's viewed as "touch football" if they started calling that play.
But in theory, anything to make the players stop using their heads to gain leverage is a good thing.

Video was very choppy but I assume from the text that he was not carrying the ball. I can see how a non-ball carrier blocking with their helmet would be called. Is there an example of the ball carrier lowering their helmet to get extra yards being called? My web search didn't reveal one in a few minutes of looking.

Watch out, fullbacks.Â
Time for puffy impact-absorbing helmets
