favorite WR targets ? - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 11-26-2017

Costello and Arcega-Whiteside seem to have good chemistry.
For the 10 games or so which Chryst started, did he have a favorite WR or not really ?

Without looking it up, my sense was that Chryst favored Irwin - perhaps too much so in that he tended to lock onto him. I think Costello has spread it around a lot more.

Does Irwin wear jersey #2 when playing WR and #30 when returning kicks ?  If so, why two different jersey numbers for the same player ?

Stanford (and most teams) have a player on offense and a player on defense with the same number.
That's perfectly fine, but causes a problem on special teams, as two players with the same number cannot be on the field at the same time. Brandon Simmons (also #2) plays on most special teams, so when Irwin goes in he needs a different number.

Happens quite often - you see guys with temp jerseys on special teams all the time.

The roster has so many players that 0-99 is not a sufficient amount of numbers to allow each player their own number ?
Or is that the various field positions are constrained by a limited range of number options ?

Re: favorite WR targets ? - martyup - 11-26-2017

#7 is retired.

I think the team tries to give players their favourite number if possible.

Is 0 available? Can't remember seeing it.
I think numbers 1 (Ernie Nevers), 7 (Elway + Gerhart(?)) and 16 (Plunkett) are retired. That should leave 96 numbers.
With 85 scholarship players plus walk-ons, that probably wouldn't quite work to enforce a single number per player.

Re: favorite WR targets ? - JJJ - 11-26-2017

Not that I have a vote, but if I did, I would vote for 0 and 00 as legit numbers, just like in baseball and basketball (and roulette?).  8)

Thanks for helping me understand the jersey number situation  :)

Jim Otto was 00 for the Raiders. One of, if not the best centers to ever play.

Otto and the number 00 were a perfect match :)

Re: favorite WR targets ? - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 11-26-2017

Maybe Costello and the TE Smith will become Luck-Ertz 2.0

Actually, Otto and the number 8 would have been a perfect match.

I don't remember where I saw this but I think the numbers in the 50's, 60's and 70's are not to be used for positions that normally touch the ball on offense, i.e. backfield and receivers.  I believe it is supposed to help the officials detect when an ineligible receiver is downfield.

We are Stanford.  Why not hexadecimal?

Another guy who wore '0' played for Kal.

0 and 00 used to be permitted, but current NCAA rules only allow 1-99 to be worn. I don't recall any Stanford payer wearing 0/00, though.

7 is retired in honor of John Elway, although Toby Gerhart certainly brought honor to the number while he wore it.

16 is retired in honor of Jim Plunkett, although Seyon Albert was allowed to keep wearing it until he finished his career.

Yes, eligible receivers (backs and ends) cannot wear numbers between 50 and 79. Actually you can line up as a back or end wearing such a number, but you are still ineligible -- unlike the NFL where you can report to the ref as eligible before each play.

Also I think if you are wearing an eligible number on offense you must line up as a back or end, but I'm not as sure about that.

Those are the only college rules about what numbers must go with what positions. The NFL has a lot more.
