Wheels coming off in the second half. With 2 minutes left we are down 81-67.

Troubling second-half collapses this year. Boy, I don't know.

Not only the second half meltdowns, but in this game, 28(!!) turnovers including 11 just by Davis. The game being on ESPNU, I couldn't see it, but would love to know how we turned the ball over so much.

I turned it off in disgust while we were still up by 2. I had no idea how right I was until I came here to check how it came out.
In the part I watched we were flustered by their tight frenetic defense and breakneck pace on offense.

Our football team is hogging all the mojo in our athletic program. There isn't enough left over to go around for everybody else. :-X

I had high hopes for Jerrod but this is looking really bad. He is making Dawkins look like John Wooden.

Two things, to be fair:
Portland State did just take the full force of Duke for about 30 minutes and hung with them.
And some of the fouls that they were buying were pretty, umm... iffy. The third foul on Humphrey was because they hadn't called a foul by someone raking at the ball as he gathered a rebound. He sat with Stanford leading by 11, came back in when they were up 7, and then was called for an absolutely pivotal fourth foul, where the driver stuck his forearm as a bar directly into Humphrey's midsection, extended well away from his body and shoving Humphrey backwards - and Humphrey was called for the foul. At that point, it was Stanford 55-53.
Stanford scored 6 points over the next 8 minutes of game clock.
Not sure if it would have made a difference, but it would've been nice not to have to play a walk-on guard for 18 minutes against a great three-point shooting team.
Sorry, it was kind of frustrating. Not sure I'm willing to blame Haase yet, but it seems like there's no real leader on the floor - Davis is too raw, and Cartwright and White have problems staying in front of people defensively. Travis is amazing, but can't feed himself the ball; that's why Humphrey's absence was so glaring.

I've kept hoping each year that Humphrey would cut back on the stupid fouls. He hasn't, and I've stopped hoping.
Cartwright isn't a complete liability any more because he's willing to shoot now. But he can't create his own shot and he and White are liabilities on defense whether in man or zone. Unfortunately that means that Davis has to log the majority of PG mins. I love his raw talent but it's really raw. He's averaging 5 TOs per game. Hopefully that goes down over time this year.
I love da Silva's game.
Not clear when or whether Pickens and Sheffield will be back, but also not clear if that will actually help that much.
At this point I'm just hoping they end up with a better record than last year, but I'm not optimistic.

When no one knows what to do, things can really get ugly. It was perfectly clear a few minutes into the second half that Stanford was going to lose the basketball game. What was not clear was that an individual player (Davis) and to a lesser extent the team would be humiliated. Now I fully believe that being a basketball coach at Stanford is an incredibly difficult job, but when I look at the long line of black shirts (coaches) on the Stanford bench, I keep wondering why no one could help Davis. Couldn't someone sit down with him during a time out and give him some guidance. Finally, after far too long, Davis was pulled from the game. I hope he will not give up and I hope the team will not give up, but I do see Kansas on our future schedule. I have no idea how we get from here to there.

I do wonder how much of the PT decisions by the coach are influenced by Player X being "my recruit," while Player Y was a Dawkins recruit. I used to take question any such assertions because coaches are competitive and want to win now. Admittedly, Cartwright has been shaky. But then what adverb describes Davis's play?Â
And we'll never know how much damage was caused to hoops program with the Okpala sit out. I just hope he suits up for the Cardinal at some point and enjoys his time on the Farm.
