Well deserved! Plus the one starter not listed above, Alade, received honorable mention for all Pac 12.

Re: WVB take all the honors - terry - 11-28-2017

The OSU guy got coach of the year? Seems like that shows a lack of respect for Stanford's coach.

Re: WVB take all the honors - Viking_Guy - 11-28-2017

Terry, I think the difference was the delta in Oregon State's performance over what was expected.  Hambly inherited the defending national champions, after all.

Re: WVB take all the honors - terry - 11-28-2017

Yeah, but Oregon St. went 11-9 and finished 7th. Stanford went 19-1 and lapped the field in Hambly's first year. If that isn't good enough to win conference honors, then I guess his name should have been taken off the ballot, because he never had a chance.

Re: WVB take all the honors - CompSci87 - 11-28-2017

COY usually is the coach whose team most exceeded expectations. It would be boring to always give it to the coach of the conference champs.

Yep, as it should be. OSU was 5-15 the year before, so won 6 more matches than the year before. That's an awfully big turnaround, more than doubling the conference win total, including a season sweep over Washington. Stanford was 15-5 last year, so we won 4 more matches than last year, and probably at most only a match or two more than expected.

Like Gino at UConn getting 9 C-o-t-Y's?  That's probably what you were thinking.  Probably his first few were the result of exceeding expectations.  However, if that is a stipulation, he shouldn't win for the next decade.

Re: WVB take all the honors - BobK - 11-28-2017

Geno will never lose a game in his weak league.  Nor will any team
Come within 30.

Hambly could become national coach of the year.  We hope 😎

COY is impossible to assess objectively, and certainly both Oregon State's and Stanford's coaches must have done a good job, but I would argue that improving from 15-5 to 19-1 is more impressive (and less common) than improving from 5-15 to 11-9.

Re: WVB take all the honors - chimera - 11-28-2017

Congrats to all the award winners.  Well deserved.  Even if he did not win COY, Hambly has done an excellent job thus far.  Not so easy to change coaches and do as well as the team has.  Might be harder to take over a national champ and have the sort of success the team has had this year than to improve as OSU has done.  Maybe.

Wow, that is just awesome.

I've always been a big fan of Gaby Ailes, but IMHO Morgan Hentz is simply the best libero Stanford has ever had.

Jamie Gregory was no slouch, either, although she might have been considered the "defensive specialist" before the "libero" position became official.
