Leach to Tennessee? - washingtonismoney - 11-30-2017

Re: Leach to Tennessee? - Snorlax94 - 11-30-2017

Awww... he might escape!

I was not looking forward to playing them this year in Pullman, with their experience, Mata’afa, and Falk in his final year, etc., but I was looking forward to Stanford pummeling a Leach team next year back home.

If he escapes, too bad, a lost opportunity for serious revenge.

I feel bad for Tennesses fans. I don’t think they know what they’re getting.

His odd behavior is barely passable in the wildlands of the Palouse, but I think it’ll harm a big time program. His quirks are going to work less and less in the world of hot mics and viral videos. He is going to have more and more difficulty recruiting  when high schoolers can pop onto Youtube see what a child they’d be entrusting their futures with, and his oddness will at first nonplus, then ultimatly alienate, any major booster financial support base.

Anyway, if it’s true, good luck to Tennessee. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

if Leach wins, I don't Tennessee fans will mind his quirks at all.  the Fulmer Cup didn't seem to embarrass them much at all.  Leach's departure would weaken Pac-12 North for sure.

Yep, if you win there is an awful lot forgiven. Let's not forget Jim Harbaugh is pretty quirky. I don't think the Michigan fans mind this a bit, certainly less than they will if he can't find a way to beat Ohio State.

Actually JH is getting some heat. Record no better than Grady Hokes at this point

Re: Leach to Tennessee? - washingtonismoney - 12-01-2017

Not true that Harbaugh and Hoke have the same record. Through three seasons Hoke was 26-13 (for a .667 winning percentage), whereas Harbaugh is 28-10 (.730). Of course Hoke's first year was spectacularly lucky and there's really no comparison between the two as coaches.

So apparently Tennessee's AD reached a deal with Leach...only to be fired this morning: https://www.si.com/college-football/2017/12/01/john-currie-fired-tennessee-coaching-search-mike-leach?utm_campaign=si-ncaafb&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&xid=socialflow_twitter_si

there is more and more public grumbling about Harbs in Michigan.  one of the better lines I've read is that Michigan fans are ready for him to make more news from September to January every year, rather January to September.

Right, which just shows how human beings are affected by:
a) recency bias
b) hedonistic treadmill

For convenience's sake, we'll use FPI as our catch-all team strength metric. Harbaugh's Michigan teams have gone 11th, 3rd, and 23rd. That's a way better three-year stretch than what the previous coach served up, and more-or-less what you'd expect from a well-run Michigan team. You might have a case for worry or concern if you thought the dip from 3rd to 23rd reflected some sort of interior weakness of the Harbaugh regime (could only win with Hoke's recruits, can't find a QB, I dunno, something). But of course the team was only expected to win 9 games this year by Vegas, due to the massive exodus from the previous year, and underachieving your expected win total by 1 is hardly a crime -- especially when you lose your starting QB halfway through the season due to injury!

So everything's going fine, but because Harbaugh raised expectations beyond reasonable levels -- and the most recent impression is bad -- some people are freaking out. Now, to be fair, I'd love it if Michigan's image tanked its chances with recruits it's competing for with Stanford. But, fundamentally, everything's fine in Harbaughland.

This story is so insane.  Given the options available, Leach looked as good as anyone.  You'd have to think Sumlin is right up there, now.

Re: Leach to Tennessee? - CompSci87 - 12-01-2017

The idea of an AD eventually getting fired for hiring the wrong coach is familiar, but this case takes it up to warp speed.

Well, or the right coach. Leach is an odd bird but seems like a perfectly solid hire given Tennessee's place on the pecking order.

Rumor has it he went rogue and circumvented the boosters (or really the main one, Jimmy Haslam - owner of the Browns) to try to get this done.

Nick Baumgardner of the Detroit Free Press is leading the complaining.  Harbaugh is 10-3, 10-3 and 8-4.  Easier to complain this year versus the two prior years.  Be interesting to see how he does next year when he has his recruits.

Re: Leach to Tennessee? - Hurlburt88 - 12-01-2017

This has been a down year for their talent.  Next year is the real test IMHO

Re: Leach to Tennessee? - BostonCard - 12-01-2017

Yeah, Michigan sent basically its entire defense to the NFL last year.  They strike me a bit like Washington after 2015; remember, UW had a great D in 2014, but many went to the NFL, then did surprisingly well in 2015 with a very young team (true frosh QB, RB, and LT), and then broke through in 2016.

That being said, there will be a lot more pressure on Harbaugh to show results next year.

Not disagreeing with anything you state here.  Fact is, Harbaugh's shelf life is 3-4 years.  After that, his shtick loses any sort of appeal to fans.

Re: Leach to Tennessee? - BostonCard - 12-01-2017

By the way, in proof you can come home again, I've seen some twitter chatter about none other than Lane Kiffin going back to Tennessee.  I think that's dumb (about as likely as Tyrone Willingham being rehired as Stanford head coach), but still, I thought "man, those folks must be desperate"
