New Director's Cup update - fullmetal - 06-02-2011

As expected, Stanford leads the to-date point totals over the academic year, with margins of ~260 pts over second-place Ohio State and ~300 points over third-place North Carolina.

I think Stanford lengthens its lead over Ohio State with points to come in women\'s rowing, baseball, and track & field.  North Carolina could make up ground in baseball (#13 to Stanford\'s #24) and track & field, but a second-place Stanford finish in rowing is hard to overcome.

More informed opinions welcome!

If Ohio State wins, will they have to give the Cup back?

Re: New Director's Cup update - fullmetal - 06-09-2011

Maybe if they won by less than the margin of points earned through their football team (plus whatever their 11th best men's team scoring value for the season).

I didn't even realize Ohio State had a men's volleyball team, btw.  They won the national championship this year.

Better get the Directors Cup back before Terrelle Pryor sells it

First he'll have a tattoo of it inked on himself somewhere...so that he'll always have something to remember it by.  Who knew tattoos were so expensive?

According to the Chronicle, we've clinched out 17th cup in a row!

Re: New Director's Cup update - fullmetal - 06-10-2011

Apparently we've won the women's Capitol One Cup and are 11 pts out of first place for the men's Capital One Cup.  A really nice finish in baseball would lock that up.

Funny how Eastern Washington is third in the men's race there.  Oh yes, they have 60 pts, and that's because they won the D3 football championship.  Twenty points for a first-place finish, times the 3x multiplier for football being football, and voila--clearly Eastern Washington is one point better than Stanford in this Capitol One Cup race.  Ridiculous.

Are you sure that the women's race is over? California should pick up a bunch of points for its College World Series appearance in softball. (Stanford will also pick up a few points if it finishes in top 10 in the softball rankings.) That would seem to give California a chance to overtake Stanford with a strong performance in track & field. It seems like a long shot, but not impossible.

On the men's side, a bunch of teams still appear to have a chance to win it, if they can win or finish well at the College World Series. In the super-regionals, the best outcomes from Stanford's point of view are:

- UC-Irvine over Virginia
- Dallas Baptist over California
- Texas A&M over Florida State
- South Carolina over Connecticut
- Mississippi State over Florida
- Arizona State over Texas

FM,  Eastern Washington won the FCS (FKA D1-AA) championship.  Since it is D1, it counts in the Capital One Cup.  Unless they change the scoring, the FCS champ every year is almost certainly assured a high finish in the final standings.

Spiny, thanks for the clarification.  I didn't read that article carefully enough I suppose.

The rules will be changed only if Stanford wins.
