Buddy Teevens - terry - 12-06-2017

For some reason, it occurred to me today to check on Buddy Teevens. It turns out that he is having pretty good success at Dartmouth.

Teevens returned to Dartmouth right after Stanford fired him. He has been there ever since (13 seasons, 2005-17).

Teevens' first five seasons back at Dartmouth were very rough, with a terrible record of 9-41 during that time.

But Dartmouth stuck with Teevens, and his teams improved. In the last eight seasons, Dartmouth has gone 52-28, with just one losing season. In the last four seasons, Dartmouth has gone 9-1 once (winning the Ivy League title) and 8-2 twice.

Including Teevens' earlier stint at Dartmouth (1987-91), he has now coached Dartmouth for 18 seasons, longer than any other Dartmouth coach.

FWIW.

This is Teevens' second go-round at Dartmouth.  His first coaching career there was a microcosm of the last 13 years.  He started 2-8, went 5-5 twice, then won the Ivy League twice with twin 9-1 seasons, at which point he decided to go to Tulane for six miserable seasons, then carried Spurrier's clipboard until he landed at Stanford.

I suspect that his being Dartmouth's quarterback from 1975 - 1978 also gave them a little patience with him.  Perhaps he's their Todd Husak.

Please refer to him by his proper name - He Who Must Not Be Named  :P :P

Re: Buddy Teevens - CompSci87 - 12-06-2017

Glad to see Terry didn't start this thread to propose Buddy as an OC candidate.

I dunno, he seemed to do well carrying the clipboard for more competent coaches, so maybe he'd do just fine this time around.

I thought that was W.illingham.  Isn't Teevens:  Ted's Buddy?

Buddy has found his niche. Coaching in a league where it is nice if you win, but nobody gets too upset if you don't.
After all, they are academic institutions. :)

Re: Buddy Teevens - Snorlax94 - 12-07-2017

All this talk of Ivy-ball reminded me of a former school mate.

One of my high school classmates went to Harvard believe it or not on a full-ride football scholarship.

His family couldn’t afford to visit Boston, but he was flown up to be interviewed for a “leadership” scholarship. After he got back, and we asked him about his trip, he said it was just a bunch of crusty old rich dudes asking him again and again, if he got the scholarship, would he be playing for the Harvard football team. He told them absolutely and that he’d definitely play football there. He was admitted to Harvard, and received a full-ride “leadership” scholarship.

He never intended to play football there, but perhaps the rich donors got the last laugh, because he flunked out. I sometimes wonder whether angry donors, if they felt deceived, could pull strings to make life more difficult for a student. Though, I am not saying that was necessarily the case here, because his academics were mediocre.
