Re: Mario Cristobal Named Oregon HC - teejers1 - 12-08-2017

According to my Duck colleague (who is still pissed at Taggart), this was the correct/best hire.

Keeps the program "on track" as much as possible, following the Taggart bail.

I am hoping that Taggart takes Jim Leavitt (Ducks DC, former Colorado DC) with him to FSU.  He has improved the Ducks defense far too much for my liking...

I get the idea of keeping the program "on track" when moving from a highly successful regime like that of Chip Kelly. The Helfrich hire made a lot of sense to me.  I liked hiring internally when Harbaugh left. Taggert has had one average year, albeit partly due to a key QB injury. What exactly is there to keep on track other then 1 good recruiting class?

That being said, due to a lack of demand for Cristobal's services as a head coach, I'm sure they can structure a contract that is friendly to the school at a good price and high buyout. That way they can try him out, and if they change again in a year or two it won't be particularly expensive.

From the Oregon chatter I have heard, that was pretty much their main interest.

Re: Mario Cristobal Named Oregon HC - terry - 12-08-2017

Cristobal's previous head coaching job was at FIU. He had a losing record, but he did a little better than the coaches who came before and after him:

15-41  Don Strock, 2002-06
27-47  Mario Cristobal, 2007-12
10-30  Ron Turner, 2013-16

Cristobal's records during his 6 seasons at FIU:

2007  1-11
2008  5-7
2009  3-9
2010  7-6
2011  8-5
2012  3-9

Interesting pick for Oregon.

I read somewhere today that over 70 current Oregon players signed a petition backing Cristobal, so keeping the current players happy might have been a factor, too.

On ESPNU radio this morning, Childers and Neuheisel were a bit baffled by the move because they see Cristobal as a Florida guy, with extensive recruiting connections in the Southeast.  Neuheisel views success at Oregon as being highly contingent on knowing how to recruit successfully in California.  Let's hope he's right!

Others have noted that Cristobal being a Florida guy is likely to mean it will be harder for Oregon to keep him if he is successful.
See for example ... Willie Taggart.

Re: Mario Cristobal Named Oregon HC - martyup - 12-08-2017

Taggert gutted the Ducks when FSU plucked him from Oregon so late.  Oregon had to promote from within because all the other "good" coaches had been hired elsewhere.

Ditto teejers "source". Martyup's point on the paucity of sure things highly germane. Other internal option was Leavitt, who did do a scary good job for them this year. However, there were a couple factors going against Leavitt including his stated desire to return to head coaching @ Kansas State, and some residual taint (legit or not) from his departure from USF for alledged (never proven) verbal abuse.

On those kinds of issues Cristobal was clean, and he has many other pluses including the significant player support cited by His Eminence Sagehen, plus his 4 year stint with Saban @ Bama as his O-Line coach; the last two years as his recruiting coordinator as well. His coaching postdoc with Saban came after his FIU stint, and Bama does recruit nationally, so the opining that he'd be limited outside of FL seems questionable. Further, as point man for gaining verbals from 3 OLine prospects for UO's 2018 class (1 from PA, 2 from CA) he's already got a couple of data points to counter that argument.

The Eugene paper's Ducks writer, Steven Mims, today stated that 3 of the other defensive coaches have already indicated a preference for staying, as has co-OC Marus Arroyo (ex of OK State).

So, the Duckies still have a lot of issues, but don't look to be in as dire circumstances as they were the past week while rumors of the candidacy of Kevin Sumlin and Jeff Tedford swirled around.

BTW, I am formally changing my view on the UO/Boise game from a Ducks sell to a buy. I think the athletes will be hyper focused to validate this hire of their choice by acclamation. I see a double digits Duck victory, and 4-5 bowl wins for Pac12.

Oh?  Makes him sound like Oregon's answer to Buddy Teevens.

Except Teevens was not an inside hire with a year of demonstrated ability, and actively supported by roughly a two thirds super majority of current players. But other than that, sure.
