As a "Players who could surprise in bowl season"

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/page/CFPBowlWho121117/players-surprise-bowl-season

Quote:Stanford's future at quarterback looks very bright after Costello emerged late this season. He threw 11 touchdown passes against only two interceptions and had effective performances in wins over UCLA, Arizona State, Cal and Notre Dame. Bowl practices should really help the redshirt freshman before facing a stout TCU defense in San Antonio.

With a strong performance in the bowl game, will he be set for starting in 2018? There were rumors of burning Mills redshirt while our passing game struggled. Is he really good enough to unset a returning QB with a coupe of big wins (if he ends up beating TCU)?

One year ago, you could have written that exact sentence with different names.

When you say "you" could have written it, I assume you don't literally mean, me, because I could not have written that. I did not think Chryst's performance warranted giving him the benefit of the doubt/lead/edge going into spring ball over Burns, Costello and whoever else can throw a ball on the roster.. I do think that Costello has had a fairly strong performance, but with significant room for improvement. I think there's a lot bigger gap for a QB who hasn't taken a meaningful game snap to make up on Costello to get a shot at game one.

There are rumors and there are rumors.

As far as I could tell, those particular rumors were mainly fans pining away for something different on message boards.

The rumor I hear now is a setback for Mills' knee. Not sure it is reliable.

Re: Costello recognized - washingtonismoney - 12-14-2017

Separate from the Mills rumors, there's a brobdingnagian difference between Costello 2017 and Chryst 2016: Costello has performed better against a much tougher schedule. The best win Chryst notched during his 2016 starting run was... I dunno, Big Game?

It's also hard to judge Costello's best win, but that's because UW and N.D. were both real good.

Meanwhile Costello has performed much better than Chryst, even without the friction of a tougher schedule. To be brief, Chryst averaged 6.01 yards per play versus Costello's 6.92.

Of course, it's a small(ish) sample size in each case and it's possible Costello will revert to the mean in the Alamo Bowl or in 2018. But Costello's also young -- younger than Chryst -- so it's equally, if not more probable, that he continues to gain strength and becomes an all-conference type of QB.

I agree. Costello looked better and against much better defenses then Chryst did a year prior. He didn’t look unbeatable, but the bar has definitely been raised.

Didn't he travel to an away game (Oregon St?) and dress for the game or something? I thought there was a bit more substantiation than just fans pining.

Re: Costello recognized - teejers1 - 12-14-2017

1.  Mills is legit - closest thing to Andrew coming out of HS;

2.  I believe the reports/rumors on Mills' injury situation are true, so a setback there; and

3.  Does anyone really need to review stats to know that Costello at end of 2017 season gave better performances/had earned more deference as next year's starter than did Chryst at end of 2016 season?  Again, often times the eye test is sufficient.

Re: Costello recognized - Goose - 12-14-2017

It also can't be discounted that Chryst was seriously injured at the end of last year. It was not even clear that he would be ready to play at the start of 2017. Even if you look at "same time, last year", it was clear that Stanford's passing game was very pedestrian, at best. Costello, OTOH, has shown the ability to make the tough throws against good teams. That is a much different situation than last year. What happens going forward is understandably less clear. The sample size is small enough that we don't know what Costello's "mean value" is, or will become, as he matures in the system. Right now, it is safe to say he hasn't disqualified himself as a "solid" stating QB for Stanford. He may well be more.

Re: Costello recognized - bbm233 - 12-14-2017

What does our QB meeting room look like next year? Costello (RS So), Mills (RS Fr) and West (Fr)? That's got to be as young as anybody in the country. Is it announced that Chryst is moving on, or is that just the consensus opinion?

Even though the group lacks experience, I like it better than what we had going into this year. I believe there is a lot more upside, which we are going to need if Love goes pro.

Re: Costello recognized - GoodGrief - 12-14-2017

I am super-proud of Costello and the way he stepped up (literally and figuratively) this season. I look forward to pleading for Mills to start next year, because that is what I do. I'm always in favor of the QB on the bench (starters named "Andrew Luck" excluded)

You are probably not old enough to be a Brodie guy over YA in 1958.

At the football banquet, Chryst was introduced as a graduating senior. That's not always the final word, but it's usually a good indication.

I wasn't there and never saw pix of Chryst before his last home game. Horrible Harry was wearing a "MY LAST WALK" t-shirt, which is a pretty good indicator too.  :P

I think there's been... at least one instance of a MY LAST WALK player coming back, but can't recall offhand. Anyway, I expect Horrible Harry (and Love, at a minimum)  to leave, but I enjoy daydreaming about how good the 2018 team would be with everyone back.

Michael Rector if I'm not mistaken

Davis Mills - JohnR34231 - 12-15-2017

If his knee problems are back that is definitely bad news.
That would mean he has injured it, gotten over it, injured it again (over a year ago) gotten over it (or never really did), and now it is bothering him again. Sounds like it is becoming a chronic problem.

Re: Costello recognized - lex24 - 12-15-2017

My guess is he will transfer. Can’t see him in NFL.
