It's official: Pritchard - washingtonismoney - 12-19-2017

Here's the official site's writeup: http://www.gostanford.com/news/2017/12/19/football-pritchard-to-direct-offense.aspx

I liked Shaw's comment about Pritchard "expand[ing] our offense," for what it's worth.

Re: It's official: Pritchard - ColoradoTree - 12-19-2017

I liked that, too.

That said, I'm not sure I like the fact that he'll continue to be position coach for QBs and WRs, though:
Quote:Pritchard was named the Kevin M. Hogan Quarterbacks Coach prior to the 2016 season, and will continue to oversee quarterbacks and wide receivers.

Of course, Bloomgren kept coaching the OL even when he was OC, so it's certainly doable, and I trust Shaw to divvy up responsibilities as he sees fit, particularly with the benefit of an extra assistant coach this year.  But using one opening on OL and the other on QB/WR seemed like a reasonable thing if you're going to have a first-year OC.

Re: It's official: Pritchard - Phogge - 12-19-2017

Shaw is the OC. He does what he does.

Expanding our offense? I thought we had the deepest playbook of all?

Interesting that Saban is never afraid to hire from outside his staff, but for the most part, they still use the basic Alabama philosophy--defense and ball control. Don't understand the hesitancy to look outside. Diversity, after all, is a good thing.

Re: It's official: Pritchard - washingtonismoney - 12-19-2017

Shaw’s coaching hires on offense so far:
Pep Hamilton: (INSIDE)
Mike Sanford (as RB coach): (BORDERLINE)*
Bloomgren (as OL coach): (OUTSIDE)
Crook: (OUTSIDE)
Sanford (as WR/QB): (INSIDE)
Turner: (INSIDE)
Pritchard: (INSIDE)
Taylor: (OUTSIDE)
Bloomgren (as OC): (INSIDE)
Pritchard (as OC): (INSIDE)
Gould: (OUTSIDE)

I count six inside hires, four outside, and one borderline.* Hardly seems like a portrait of a man unwilling or hesitant to go outside Stanford to hire offensive coaches.

*(Sanford served on Western Kentucky's staff as QB coach in 2010, but before that was a grad assistant from 2007-8. Does that make him inside or outside when Shaw first hired him? I suppose you could argue either way, so I'm calling it borderline.)

It's official:  same old, same old (underperformance on O . . . dwindling fan interest . . . who cares?).

Re: It's official: Pritchard - Phogge - 12-20-2017

Dwindling fan interest would be improved by playing the games at 5pm in September and October instead of 7:30, November games at 1:30, not playing on Thursday or Friday night, scheduling Michigan or Ohio State not UC Davis, not scheduling three games before Fall Quarter begins, serving drinkable coffee at the concession stands and about a thousand other promotional things.

Of course Larry Scott owns the Stanford Athletic Department so none of the above will happen.

I stopped going to UC games when Pete Elliot and Marv Levy were coaching a boring brand of football but continued coming to Stanford Stadium because Cactus Jack threw the ball. Hung in there with gritted teeth during Buddyball and Wlatball and have been rewarded with a great 10 year run. Same old, same old? I'll take it (and the nine or ten wins each year) but I retain the right to bitch when a fourth down run fails.

No Tonga  juice would mean no coffee needed my friend

Re: It's official: Pritchard - Langdude - 12-20-2017

Shawchard?
Shawvita?
Tavid Shawchard?
Pritchaw?

I like "Davita." I think that was Phogge or Goose.

Davita is a nationwide, sort of shady, owner of dialysis centers. Let's not use that.

Re: It's official: Pritchard - jacketree - 12-20-2017

First significant dingbat play call next year and you will get a Tavitashawmockery from me.

Re: It's official: Pritchard - GoodGrief - 12-20-2017

Pshaw!

+1 with ya all the way on this one, TC.

Tavita and David are the same name.

Re: It's official: Pritchard - Langdude - 12-21-2017

Good. Then we can call them Davida or Tavid. Or we can just cut to the Hebrew chase and call them "beloved."

Re: It's official: Pritchard - Phogge - 12-21-2017

Shard. As in what will happen to some of us seniors when they fail on fourth and goal in overtime against Clemson in next year's title game.

Re: It's official: Pritchard - phxfan - 12-21-2017

The one thing we can be sure of is that David Shaw is not taking us to any playoffs. Not in his DNA.

Re: It's official: Pritchard - gocard14 - 12-21-2017

Disagree entirely. Our recruiting just isn’t good enough to consistently be a top 4 team like Alabama, OSU or Clemson. That means, like every other team, we need things to break our way for players panning out/injuries to have a shot. 2011 would have made the playoff had it existed then. 2012 and 2014 has playoff caliber defense but not offense. 2015 has a playoff caliber offense but not defense. We just need things to come together at the right time. If we keep up a high level of play and recruiting, it will eventually.

Well, in 2015 you certainly can't blame the defense for the NW loss.
Also, although the defense definitely had some problems with the Ducks, the offense had chances to win the game for us in the 4th quarter and couldn't get it done.
A win in either of those might have put us in the playoffs.
