Stanford vs. TCU Alamo Bowl strategies -
81alum - 12-26-2017
Perhaps I missed it, but we are less than two days away from the Alamo Bowl and I have seen very little analysis/speculation about strategy, match-ups, etc. TCU lost to Oklahoma twice, as we lost to USC twice. They lost to Iowas State but won the rest of their games. They are reputedly a very good run defense team, and the 12th best defense overall. Offensively they rank in the 30s--Kenny Hill has a 149 passer rating, and overall they earn 4.5 yards per rush.
We on the other hand are behind TCU in most statistical categories--a defense ranked 30th, Costello has a 139 rating, but we average 6.0 yards per rush.
Those of you who have seen TCU games this season, how do you expect us to match up; in particular, and how will our run offense match up with their run defense?

Have we done our individual prognostications for this game or do we not do it for bowl games?

He will, and if it doesn't put some serious points on the board (or maybe even if it does) prepare for another long discussion about his approach on offense.

I'm not sure if BC will want to include this game in the final standings, but we can still share our picks.
Mine is Stanford 28, TCU 24.
Geaux Cardinal!

The TCU Horned Frogs are 9-6 in bowl games under coach Gary Patterson; the Stanford Cardinal are 4-2 in bowls under coach David Shaw.
Stanford has done great with Costello, and almost bested USC in the CG. Horned frogs lost in their CG, 41-17.
TCU has outrushed 8 of 10 opponents.Â
TCU is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 bowl games.
Stanford is 21-3 in its last 24 games after a loss.
In the first game we allowed SC to convert 10-12, then limited them to 6-13 in the championship game. Being able to get off the field like that shaved them 10 plus points and 5 minutes or so of possession between the two games.
TCU needs to limit Bryce's big plays. Force Stanford to have 10 plus play drives, putting more pressure on Costello. But Costello only had two INTs in his seven main games. He's very smart.
Both defenses do a good job of pressuring quarterbacks as the Cardinal have recorded 32 sacks and the Horned Frogs have 41, the fourth most in the FBS. Mat Boesen has 11.5 sacks on the season.
TCU, notoriously stingy in giving up yards on the ground, is ranked fourth in the country at just 99 rushing yards per game allowed. Stanfords D gives up nearly 180 yards.
Scramblers like Darnold and TCU's Kenny Hill make life difficult for Stanford. But like Darnold, Hill throws lots of INTs, most in the conference (13).
Attitude may be advantage: Stanford. Shaw always takes a business-like, non-emotional attitude to each game. Patterson was stalking the TCU sideline in the first quarter vs. Baylor yelling Wake up! Wake up! to his team? After getting skunked in the Big 12 title game, TCU may underperform.
Keys: TCU has to contain Love. Stanford's tackles have to do well against TCU's twin monster DEs. TCU has to limit turnovers. Costello will be the difference.
My prediction: Stanford 27, TCU 24.

Also think Costello is key. We'll see plenty of third downs against a TCU defense that swarms to the ball and tackles well. The farther Love is from 100%, the greater our reliance on Costello becomes.

I am very interested in how we attack the defensive ends. Is Little going to play? In any case, will we try to push them around or will we try to let them go where they want to go and run around them? Love is so quick that if we can read it correctly we may be able to use their own aggressiveness against them. Best case, Love has a Day and we don't need KJ so much. However, if that doesn't happen, we do need a plan "B".

I'll expect Little to be brobdingnagian playing in his home state after a long injury layoff
That optimism aside, I have not heard for sure he is playing yet . . .
