The morning report from the University of California Chronicle - Phogge - 12-30-2017

Fitz reports and quotes a much more optimistic Shaw than we pencilnecks are. The article implies at least a ten win season. Right.

of course when you play fourteen games a ten win season is not the same benchmark as when you played at most twelve games (or in the youth of the Phogge when nine or ten wins was an undefeated season  ;) )

The offense should be good, but right now I’m not seeing enough on D to get us to ten wins. Hope I’m wrong.

Big 10 was limited to nine games and there was a no repeat rule in the Rose Bowl which penalized one of the two or three best teams of all time, 1954 UCLA.

If Reid & Meeks both leave early, then I agree

Losing both of them would be bad, but my concern is still 100% the DL. If we can't stop the run up front, it doesn't much matter what the corners and safety do, we will not win 10 games, and maybe not 7. Probably we will get more from the red-shirts than I am accounting for, but right now, in terms of returning, experienced talent on the DL, the cupboard is pretty bare. This year, despite having 66, we couldn't get off the field on defense. Several games came down to a one stop situation. We couldn't get that stop most times. We did against OSU, when we got the fumble, and we "held" TCU to a field goal when we had to. Against SDSU and USC in the CCG, we couldn't do it, and one could argue the same in the WSU game, although not quite as effectively.
