ND rethinking scheduling - TreesAndBirds - 12-31-2017

More Mercers, less Stanfords?

ND has been significantly adversely affected by Stanford's rise. They use to present themselves as the best combination of academics and athletics, and they use to have an expected late season win against us. Not so much any more.

ND needs to get off their high horse and join a conference already.

I enjoyed the title of that article you linked:
"N.otre Dame will assess scheduling in future after facing late slew of ranked opponents"

A quick history lesson for those unaware - the Stanford-N.otre Dame series was restarted as a home and home in 1988.  It was always October.  I remember the 1989 version well, because it was a reunion weekend for me.  Traffic was really bad getting onto campus because it was a day game (remember those?)  The attendance was 86,000 in the Old Lady.  The last day game in that series was 1997 - I remember that one as well because it was a beautiful 80 degree day, both Mike Mitchell and Anthony Bookman each had over a 100 yards, and the crowd was 75,651.

It was after 1997 that N.otre Dame demanded the change to post-Thanksgiving. They had already secured their every year visit to California (it's at U.SC every even year) for recruiting exposure.  They wanted to reward their team with a late season game in California as well, given that South Bend hasn't the best weather at the end of November.

So, now they're upset because Stanford definitely derailed their CFP chances in 2015 and their faint but possible hopes in 2017?  Who wanted that schedule?
