OT: Champions\' League Final - dabigv13 - 05-22-2010

Solid display from Inter today, Milito proving again that he might be the most underrated dominating striker in a while. Mourinho, while a brobdingnagian dick, knows how to put together a winning performance.

As a Serie A fan, I really enjoyed watching this game. I think most neutral fans hate to watch this style, but I was left time and again impressed with the organization of Inter\'s defense, the excellent spacing, and the incredibly skillful individual ability that led to the goals.

And a bit of a Stanford connection- at around the 87-88 minute mark, the video feed panned out to show the Milan supporters, and right in the middle of the screen was a guy wearing a black Stanford Est 1891 shirt. Truly an international university.

Anybody else watch?

Re: OT: Champions\' League Final - washingtonismoney - 05-22-2010

Here\'s the thing I don\'t get about big time euro soccer: Murinho announces his moving to another team (Real Madrid) right after winning the championship. I guess Real is more prestigious than Inter, but it\'s not as if Inter is a slouch prestige wise and they just pulled off the treble...

Anyway, when it comes to soccer, the Europeans have us beat from the mercenary perspective.

Re: OT: Champions\' League Final - yvonne - 05-23-2010

pretty much.  Real is where the money is.

Re: OT: Champions\' League Final - dabigv13 - 05-23-2010

These teams aren\'t really moneymaking ventures in Europe...many of them are political tools, or personal playthings. That leads to a lot of ridiculous spending from a select few teams, and Real really leads the pack with it. I don\'t think Mourinho is doing it for the money though. I think there\'s two factors; 1) I think he had a lot of bitter feuds with the Italian media and Italian soccer officials these past two years despite his great results, and he\'s through with that grief. Italian soccer can be very insular, and Mourinho was never on the inside. 2) I think Mourinho is one of the most ego-driven people in a sport full of them, and he wants to do something historic by winning three CL\'s with three different teams.

Either way, he still gets paid in Euros  :\'(

Re: OT: Champions\' League Final - washingtonismoney - 05-23-2010

He gets in paid in euros now. Lord knows when Greece or someone will withdraw from the Euro.

Re: OT: Champions\' League Final - Pastor - 05-23-2010

I think we\'ll see parity before anyone withdraws from the Euro...but probably Italy first.  Keep an eye on Sterling, which will be close to parity soon as well.

Re: OT: Champions\' League Final - washingtonismoney - 05-23-2010

Italy first? I don\'t know about that...for whatever reason the markets haven\'t been hammering Italy like they have Greece, Spain, Portugal, et. al., and it\'s not as if the Italian public/private debt is that much better than those other countries. Plus that, none of those countries--to my knowledge, at least--is led by Silvio Berlusconi.

But a world with a dollar/pound sterling/euro parity is a world with an ever-widening U.S. trade deficit, which can\'t be good, so I certainly hope that doesn\'t come to pass.

Re: OT: Champions\' League Final - Pastor - 05-23-2010

Italy has been talking about it for a while, it would help them cover the mismanagement of the economy.  Yes, fewer exports but with all the countries struggling for exports, long-term it would revive the EU and that would lead to a greater market there...so what comes down, must go up.  In addition, the US and the EU must handle their debt...printing more money isn\'t really possible but a sub rosa encouragement of hyper inflation would do that.

Too many moving parts...but Soros like investing will make many rich.  The new Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, has told some that he believes that the pound is too high relative to the other major currencies....

But who knows, it is complex.  One thing for sure, Greece can\'t leave the Euro.
