The Olympics -
cardcrimson - 02-01-2018
Surprising to me is that the Olympics start next week and there has been very little in the sporting news about the games. Only a few stories in the news news about North and South Korea marching together, etc.
Do we as a country just not care anymore?
Any Stanford athletes we should be watching and cheering for?

Great question about Stanford but nothing as I can recall and of course no Winter Olympic sports at Stanford
Sports illustrated has its Winter Olympics issue out and I still subscribe at 20 cents per issue lol
Now if Summer Id be glued to the TV for 16 hours a day

Well, my cousin (actually first cousin-once-removed) and her partner are participating in the ice dancing competition so <I> care... :-)
They placed 8th at the Sochi Olympics and we're hoping for a much higher finish this time around.
Otherwise, haven't heard a peep about any Stanford-affiliated participants either.

Close enough! Names so we know who to root for? I assume we have more than one pair competing. . . .

Madison Chock and Evan Bates - this will be tough. Their best season was probably 2015 when they took firsts at the US championships and in the Short Program at Worlds (+2nd in the long program & 2nd overall there), with 2 more golds at Gran Prix competitions. They haven't quite maintained that level, but still have had numerous GP silver and bronze finishes since. They took 3rd at this year's nationals, but they've been putting a lot of emphasis on improving their long program skate these last couple of seasons and took first in that portion of the competition.

Apparently we don't have any athletes at the games this year, here's a list with schools:

As you'd expect, colder climate schools have the most representation:
Westminster College (Utah) - 22
Dartmouth - 11
Minnesota - 8
Among the Pac-12:
Utah - 8
Colorado - 5
×ÉÉ - 1 (short track speed skater)
UCLA - 1 (bobsled)
Oregon - 1 (alpine skier)

Regarding Stanford affiliated athletes at the Olympics, Earl Koberlein was the keeper of the Stanford medal count within the AD, I believe. Per the other thread, he's now running the AD at Menlo (Congrats Earl!) I think the focus was mainly on the Summer Games. I always wondered what our medal count was for the winter games and I don't believe I have ever seen that information.  A few names come to mind, but I'm sure there are many(?) more:
Debbie Thomas - figure skating
Eric Heiden - speed skating
Given that Sc touts that they are tops in Olympic medal count, I wonder if we pass them counting the Winter games? I think we were very close after the last Olympics.

Will the NBC tearjerker stories outnumber the US medals like all their previous Olympic coverage?

Only if they have room left over from the Tonya Harding retrospective...
