I think that school could use a new AD, frankly. I have had direct experience with both the current AD and Ass't AD. They could use a new AD.

Should I assume that he's taking a pay cut to leave Stanford?

Still though, thinking longer term and unless this got changed in the recent tax system overhaul (which I don't think happened), Stanford pays up to 50% of the going rate of Stanford tuition/year for each child's undergrad tuition, if that child is attending an accredited college or university.
Thinking even further out, the university contributes up to 5% of base salary to a full-time employee's 403(b) savings, if the employee socks away a minimum 4% of base.
Recognizing I have no clue as to Earl's situation, for an average worker bee like me, these perks are pretty hard for a worker bee like me, and most of my co-workers at Stanford, to pass up. That said, I also wish him nothing but all the best, regardless.

is a 5% match unusually high in the industry? It strikes me as pretty average and less than what an institution of Stanford's resources can afford.

The average is 2.7%, per Investopedia. Most typical match is 50 cents on the dollar.

My current employer matches 1:3. They provide no match on the over 50 catch up contribution. My previous employer was a start-up with no match. I know of some companies who will pay the match only to employees on the payroll on 31 Dec, many of these companies seem to have layoffs in Nov each year......

My current employer matches 1:1 until 4%. My previous employer didnt match, but it had a defined benefits plan. I managed to just baerely qualify (5% after 5 years). i should do the math to figure out what the equivalent contribution is, bit it is highly dependent on the discount rate.
