MBB vs. Utah - BostonCard - 02-08-2018

Isn't someone else supposed to be starting this thread.  Perhaps because of the failure to start the thread, we are down 38-26 with about a minute left in the half.

What a Jekyll and Hyde team we have (home vs. road). Where has that team that played the Washington's gone?

Re: MBB vs. Utah - burger - 02-09-2018

I can't remember the last time I saw such bad shot selection (and I watched a LOT of games in the Dawkins era).  It seemed like every possession ended in a drive into 3 defenders resulting in a block, turnover, or altered shot that missed.

Oh well.  I guess games like this will happen with a freshman-laden team.  Onward.

Re: MBB vs. Utah - Hurlburt88 - 02-09-2018

I tuned in to see Humphrey hit one of two free throws to get us to 20-22.  Utah then went on an 11-2 so it is all my fault.

I did think we were getting it inside well during that run but none of our shots were falling.  Then the shot selection obviously deteriorated...

Re: MBB vs. Utah - Papa John - 02-09-2018

I'm going to chalk up last night's loss to altitude and a better-than-normal performance by Utah. Our team will have its mountain legs ready for CU, and I'm predicting a narrow Stanford victory.

Also, Stanford is still only a half-game out of fourth place behind UW in the conference standings, and only one game out of a tie for second place.

Hurlburt--

Yep, there was a long sequence in the first half of Humphrey finding himself wide open at the high post, turning to face, and bricking an 8 to 10 foot jump shot.  Then he tried to start to get closer to the hoop, and that led to the blocks; he's not exactly the type to power to the hoop through contact.

Our more experienced players (Pickens, Humphrey, Travis) went a combined 9-30 from the field.  30%, from two post players and our best shooter.  That would lead to problems in most any game.

But we also had our same old issue - no really good defensive guards.  Justin Bibbens, the Utes' diminutive PG, absolutely torched us, especially on the pick-and-roll, which allowed him to match-up against Humphrey on the perimeter.  7-9, including 4-4 three pointers.

We have great defensive length, and that is probably where the game is heading - Warriors' style interchangeable 6-3 to 6-9 long players.  But it feels like those players think that they can make up for being slow to react and/or out of position based on that length and athleticism.  May be a freshmen thing - they were likely able to do that at their last level of basketball.

Thanks VG.  I agree on the pick and rolls strongly!
