Stanford drops first game to UNC, 5-2. -

Well, the Tar Heels are the #3 national seed for a reason. An early single score, plus two each in the seventh and eighth innings, were too much for Stanford to overcome with its two-run eighth inning. Stanford used five pitchers for the game, starting Mark Appel (two ER) and going through Dean McArdle (1 ER), Scott Snodgress (1 ER), AJ Vanegas, and Sahil Bloom. One of UNC's runs was unearned (2 errors, both by 3B Stephen Piscotty). Brian Ragira recorded both RBIs for Stanford, sending Gaffney and Piscotty in to score.
Apparently it's really hot in Chapel Hill too, so I wonder about the team's acclimation. Hope they're ready to go tomorrow--game two starts at 3PM.

Those of you who are rooting broadly for the Pac-10 will be pleased to see that Arizona St. took the first super regional game over Texas yesterday, 2-1. Surprisingly, both runs came under star pitcher Taylor Jungmann's watch though at least one was unearned.
If Stanford had scored three in the ninth, I'm guessing Reed might have been tabbed. My guess is that teams that win the first of a three-game series tend to win the overall series, but I haven't seen stats on that.
