Roster Pipeline 2018: Offense - Langdude - 02-12-2018

Friends:

I offer here the state of our football team's personnel, given the current official roster and our 2018 signees, and some thoughts. I listed players in terms of eligibility remaining rather than school year. Because we tend to redshirt as many players as possible, I listed freshmen in that way rather than under "first year," though of course some freshmen will play next year.

For fun, I also included trivia questions under each position group.

Tomorrow or the next day I will post defense.

Key
Quarterback Chryst will be resurrected with another school, but I put him here because he is still on the roster. With Tanner McKee preliminarily committed, we have high-level recruits almost every year.

Trivia: Besides Jim Plunkett and Guy Benjamin, what other Stanford QB won the Voit Trophy?

Running Back Hopefully Scarlett and Speights will continue to develop to provide some depth; Scarlett did pretty well spelling Love last year. But unless Woods exceeds expectation, we’ll need some continued work in recruiting here.

Trivia: What former Stanford RB was also on the rugby team? (I’m guessing there are multiple answers to this question.)

Fullback Snyder was an in-season move from TE to FB. We tend to have a good recruiting pipeline here as one of the top-flight programs that uses its FB extensively.

Trivia: What Stanford player had touchdowns in five different seasons?

Tight End This is also a solid pipeline, though we did not recruit any high-level TEs this past year. Given our offense and that we did not redshirt Parkinson, we’ll need to recruit a high level pass-catching TE this next year.

Trivia: Stanford has had a lot of TEs play in the NFL. Among them, there have been Stanford TEs selected in the third round at some point in each of the last four decades. Can you name them?

Wide Receiver I didn’t think IBS would come back for a fifth year, but he’s a ST contributor. I think we’re OK here in terms of pipeline. We generally have three producing WRs since we use our TEs and backs so much. Provided Wedington stays at WR, we’re good for a while, but will need another high-level WR in the next year or two. Hopefully that is Wilson or Fehoko.

Trivia: What all-conference receiver was recruited to Stanford as an all-state quarterback?

Offensive Tackle This is where I am worried, Pt. 1. I know this year and next we’re good, but I think there is a greater than 50% chance that one or both of Little and Sarell go pro after 2019; if both do, things could get ugly. We need to recruit multiple tackles next year. But right now, we have four good ones. Maybe Sarell or Hamilton starts at RT and someone moves inside.

Trivia: What equine tackle played every down in three Rose Bowls for Stanford?

Offensive Guard This is where I am worried, Pt. 2. Again, we are good here this year, though next year will be dicey if HeBIG declares, which I put at 50/50 at this point; he goes if named AA. If he does, who plays guard in 2019? Powell or Maihen? I'm somewhat worried about our guard play for 2019, but I’m really worried about our interior line play after 2019. Another reason we may get a position switch from tackle (Stratford was a center in HS, is now listed as “Guard/Tackle”). For 2018: Fanaika may still decide to retire. In the end, I am not sure he starts, even if he does stay. Wilson could start, and/or we may get a position switch: Hamilton or Hall. But, again, we need to recruit multiple guards this next year.

Trivia: What Stanford all-American guard played linebacker in the NFL?

Center Depends on how Dalman develops. Three centers on the roster is good, but our centers are critical, making key protection identifications and audibles. Freshman center Stratford was recruited to play guard, perhaps because we already have three. But I would guess that we would have to get one next year.

Trivia: On October 6, 1979, Stanford blocked a UCLA FG attempt with a little over a minute remaining in a tie game. Elway, a freshman, drove Stanford the length of the field and Stanford kicked a game winning FG as time expired. Who was the center that snapped the ball on that field goal?

Chapple played in the days of two way players but was a great LBer at Stanford and with the 49ers. He died very young

Many football players have also played on the rugby team but J.J. Lasley made it to the US National team.

Oviously the RS are dependent on them actually redshirting; some may play snaps. Might be better to organize by the number of years of eligibility remaining (which you largely have done by doing away with the RS Senior, RS Junior, and RS sophomore designations).

Here's an assessment of needs for the class of 2019 (numbers are bare minimum and recommended):
QB: 1/1 - if 2014 taught us anything it's that we need a QB in every class
RB: 1/2 (can take two given that we took 0 in 2017)
FB: 0/1 two fullbacks every three years is fine
TE: 1/2 (should take two given that we didn't take any in 2018)
WR: 1/2 (decent shape here since we have two in last year's class)
OT: 2/3 (I suppose we could survive with 2 if we also take 2 next year, but yuck)
OG: 2/3 (two is a bare minimum; three would be better)
OC: 1/2 (we need two over the next two years)

As surmised, we have major needs in the offensive line.  We will not be in good shape unless we can pick up a full line (5 OL this year), and would be better with 6 or 7 linemen, given the two year gap.
