Super regional update: Stanford alive, down 6-5 at the top of the 9th though - fullmetal - 06-11-2011

Stanford scored one run in the first inning and four runs in the 8th inning, leaving UNC's six runs in the fourth and seventh innings (three a-piece) as a formidable mountain to climb for the Stanford offense--until that four-run eighth inning.  I'm running production for the rollerderby bout right now so I can't watch the game, but Chris Reed is on the mound looking to blank UNC at the top of the ninth, so let's hope for a lot of offense from Stanford...!

i really thought the delay hurt Stanford today.  Before the weather our offense was hot and their pen was shaky.  I saw the 9th on gametracker, and did not see how UNC got to Reed.  Nor did I see why Gaffney did not hit in the 9th.

I am surprised UNC was rewarded with such a high seed given they played 34 games at home this year (31-3).  If this were basketball they would be penalized for that kind of scheduling.  Let's hope the days of Stanford hosting the regionals return soon.

UNC may have played a lot at home this year. UNC may or may not have been worthy of the #3 seed.  Yet, it was clear that they were better than Stanford, at least playing in Chapel Hill.  Stanford baseball really turned the year around after a really slow start.  It would be nice to be as lucky as C.a.l and apparently back into a gift invite to the CWS.  Even without that CWS trip, the team had a decent year.

I thought the teams seemed pretty even.  If Giuliani's ball drops yesterday, or if there is no delay, we are at least playing tomorrow.  We had more guys drafted than they did and I did not see a talent differential.  Good days ahead for Stanford, I think.

Not to second-guess Marquess et al., but if Reed had closed the first game, would he have been able to go for a hypothetical third game in the series?
