Unfortunately, still not much information. There are undoubtedly HIPAA issues on disclosing much, and Shaw always plays it close to the vest on injuries anyway. That said, this could be a relatively "big" story. I am amazed it is as quiet as it has been.

Well "much" of Spring certainly doesn't imply "out" for Spring. IN any case, it's not like the secret is going to be able to be secret very long given Spring drills start in a few weeks. No position gets more scrutiny and attention than starting QB.
I'm much more concerned about Michael Williams than Costello, tbh.Â

Shaw's biggest recruiting mistake in terms of PR is that he didn't sign a receiver named Abbot. And ideally a two sport first baseman.

I'm pretty sure I posted similar awhile back. What a team they'd make, Abbott and Costello. I would have be very proud to extend a laurel, and hardy handshake to him had he been offered and accepted.

Agreed. I also wonder when he got injured. I worry he was playing in the Alamo Bowl hurt.
Regardless, speedy recoveries to them both.
Mike Williams's situation sounds the most potentially concerning long-term; however, I've heard of people having procedures, like say, for an arrhythmia, where the expected outcome are no restrictions on future activity and no expected long-term harm (just a healthier future). So I hope that's the case here but have no idea.
But Costello's is also very bad news. He was on such a stellar trajectory. I was hoping those spring reps along with his experience from last year would prepare him for a 2018 of Luckian proportions. Much tougher now without those spring practices.

I wonder if he played most of the year hurt, at least after ASU. There have been comments on this board about him not ever running on the read option plays. There may have been a reason. Since we don't know what the issue was, no way to know, but interesting speculation.

+1. Being able live your life in good health is a lot more important than football.

My speculation is this describes the Costello situation:
http://www.arthrohealth.com.au/labral-tears/
To cut to the chase, recovery time is usually 2-3 months. Other things to speculate on:
- Did an injury cause a labrum tear?
- If so, was it in a game, and what game?
- Was it a naturally occurring defect, something that started bothering him long before last month?
I suppose it will all come out in time. KJ is probably aiming to come back to play in the Spring game because he hasn't been ruled out, and Shaw more than likely would have said he was out if it was certain Costello would be out for sure.

I have a torn labrum in my left hip. I think the experience with this type of injury can vary widely. It doesnt necessarily impede me athletically in so far as my mobility and strength arent restricted. However, there are certain activities that do cause me considerable pain after the activity, like running. The pain typically emerges three to six hours after the activity in question. I can easily see how Costello could have incurred this injury and played the rest of the season on it with some post-game and practice pain, and deciding to get it fixed after the season.

I guess we should be ready for that. After all, a few years ago we had Hogan, Schultz and Carter. We needed a Newkirk as a Klink or LeBeau would be harder to find.

This is pretty much my thinking. He's been dealing with it for a while, played through it, and decided to get it fixed in off-season.

While I dont know its my thinking also outsider. Announcement will be made when spring practice starts.
Re: Costello -

I take it from the discussion on this thread that torn labrum is more than just conjecture. I this behind a paywall or is it "open source" somewhere?

:( me too. had torn labrum and femoral acetabular impingment syndrome diagnosed last year after having persistent soreness in my hip after I had just started swimming again. did a few months of PT and it helped some but hip does get sore at times, sometimes just when sitting for a prolonged period of time.
surgery is the route to go if one wants a faster and more definitive fix
